*** The Official Samsung Galaxy S4 Thread ***

Still on 4.2.2 Still says I have latest firmware when trying to update OTA

For the last few weeks I've been losing signal and i've missed some very important calls. I have to either toggle flight mode or reboot.

Any ideas

I was rooted but removed root via titanium

If anyone doesn't really use the camera or don't mind losing some quality in pictures I thoroughly recommend the GPE rom. It's lightweight, based on stock Android and fast! Although you'll lose all those Samsung features, but if you don't make use of them then it's no big lost. I've been running it for the past week or so and it's been great. The phone is faster than the TW bloated versions, IR still works using third party apps and what not.

I accidentally smashed the screen a few months ago, anyone able to tell me the best course of action from here? I am willing to have a go replacing it myself because I don't want to spend £100+ for it to be repaired elsewhere

thanks

Samsung with this knox rubbish have pushed me away from being a customer.

"How did Samsung go from employing CyanogenMod’s Steve Kondik and providing hardware to the custom ROM community to this sorry state?"
Because they started making money and now they want to make more money. With custom roms customers tend to keep their devices longer than Samsung wanted to, so they're loosing money.

I have also had the issue of my phone not working correctly.

I have had this phone since May 2013 when it was released, I upgraded from an S3, before that I had the S2. I loved the S2, the S3 in terms of looks wasn't an upgrade but the hardware was, when I upgraded from the S3 to the S4, I actually thought what have I done... The S4 is a bit better on paper, but most of the sales gimmicks Samsung use in this device, I never use! I actually disable them to stop them from eating battery or consuming processing power.

It started off with the device at the beginning of Dec acting weird and entered itself into a factory mode. The symptom was when you press the power button you do not have the extended power menu and it immediately shuts down. Another point is when you turn the phone off, any Wi-Fi point that you have connected too is no longer stored on the reboot.

I reported to Samsung on the 3rd Dec with the device returned on the 9th Dec with a letter explaining the problem. The first repair completed by Andy was not successful - I can only assume the letter was never read. I received the handset back and returned it to Samsung again explaining specifically over the phone the problem again and this time I thought it may have been repaired correctly. However to my extreme disappointment when I received it Thurs 2nd Jan2014 yet again the same problem is found with the phone when received back after "Simona" had performed a successful repair along with the Samsung Smart Service Checklist Completed (is this a paper exercise or actually followed)! I then had to return it again, with my phone still being in factory mode after 2 attempted repairs.

This has now left me without my handset for 6 weeks and I find this completely unacceptable. I have had to buy, out of my own pocket a S2 off ebay to tide me over whilst it was in for repair. I still haven't got the phone back and I am hoping to receive it tomorrow (17th Jan 2014), but this isn't guaranteed. To start off with I was impressed with their repair service, but this ongoing saga has left a bad taste in my mouth and ill feelings towards them.

I would advise people to go elsewhere for their handsets, Samsung keep reinventing the wheel and making gimmicky features half of the time you don't use because it consumes the devices battery being on. Rant over.

I will be selling my S4 when returned and hope that other people will take heed of this review, if you currently have an S3 and are thinking of upgrading. Go with the Sony Z1, HTC ONE, or even get get the Moto G which is £130 on Amazon at the minute and don't have to tie yourself into a long contract.

Doesnt HTC also do something restrictive with the bootloader to effectively nullify the warranty if a phone gets rooted. The phones are becoming a method payment then I can see security increasing further and further.

It's a shame you are having problems. I dont think knox has anything to do with that. Hope it gets sorted though.

No knox is a separate issue to the factory mode i was facing, however I will get the phone back - eventually with knox activated firmware on it, when I sent it away on MGA. Both parts together leave a horrid taste in your mouth when you've had your last 3 handsets from Samsung.

Just for the record I am actually really enjoying the S2 experience again, got cm 10.2 running well and getting 4+hrs screen on time and a full day standby.

S2 had the best camera out of the lot too - both the S3 and S4 are just blurry in comparison - S4 being the worst especially in low light.

Have to agree with you though - S2 was probably the peak of samsung's glory - since then it's just been downhill with gimmicks!

I know one thing - whatever my next phone is - it won't be a samsung!

hold up, have you seen how involved doing it yourself is? Watch a youtube video, its seriously hardcore iirc.. the screen and lcd are laminated together so you need to replace the whole thing which involves completely taking the thing apart and I think going through some anti tamper stickers.

Either way, I had a look out of interest and whilst I'm fairly handy with a screwdriver and have done this sort of thing a few times it just looked doomed to failure to me, let a pro do it.

Thanks for the agreement, it's even top among some budget smart phones like the moto G. Camera is better and you can pick up second hand for £90-100 quid. Definately not getting anything until I see something with reviews to backup it being worth while getting. My friend has the Z1, what a bezel and size of phone!

I'm also using the new google camera and gallery by default on the rom I've installed, which I'm getting on really well with.

I loved my s2 but no I'd pick the s4 every time, blurry cam or not.

But when I consider I sold my S2 towards the end of 2011 on ebay & since then I could have gone onto a sim only contract - £12 a month? Whereas I am actually paying nearer £30. Working that out 24 * £18 is a saving of £432 quid for something that just works, plus the grief I've had with the S4 has quite frankly just put me off using it.
