Worth the upgrade from i5 2500k to Haswell/AMD?

Currently, I am looking to downsize my PC from an ATX to an ITX. Because of that, I will be purchasing a new motherboard.

I noticed that the Z77 & Z87 motherboards are close in price. So now I am thinking whether to upgrade my CPU too.

I have been running my computer at stock over the last 2 years. I mostly play games and browse the net on my PC. Is it worth the £170 extra to upgrade to i5 4670K? Would I see performance gains?

Agreed. You may want to consider overclocking your cpu though. It seems a shame to have paid a premium for a K-series cpu and to not push the envelope at least a little. As you're moving to ITX this might be harder but it's probably still possible to get a few 100 mhz out of it.

To be honest, I have been too lazy in the past to overclock the CPU. Hopefully I will be overclocking when I move into an ITX case. Looking at the Node 304.

Getting a very basic overclock on your i5-2500k is extremely simple. All you'll need to do is adjust the multiplier in the bios (which is the work of seconds). I imagine you'll be able to get an extra 500 mhz out of it without messing around with voltages/etc. Assuming you've got a half-decent cooler at least.

I keep my 15 2500k @ 4.0. games dont need any more and even if i could get 4.2 / 4.4 i'm just increasing heat and shortening life for 5fps.....

I love my 2500k.. :)

+1
Save your money!
If you really feel the urge to spend that extra £££ put it towards a new GPU. Money well spent then. ;)
I recently upped my I5 2500k to 4.2 from running stock for a few years. On a Hyper TX3 Evo (£19.99). Iv had no problems whatsoever in terms of heat or stability. It took all of 2 mins to do as well.:)

I managed up grade from a 2500k @4.6 an z77 sabertooth for the price of £10 with the resale.

If your upgrading for the sake of upgrading.......DON'T! you would be better off clocking that little sexy chip you've got an put the cash towards other hardware :D

Cash saved or spent on other areas where its needed works out better :D.

If i hadn't off bought the parts so cheap i 100% wouldn't of upgraded, the only difference ive noticed (performance wise) is stuff like encoding an drawing software.

I needed a new motherboard not so long back, and like you was not sure what to do, so i went for it, got a whats in my sig, sold all my old stuff on the bay and got back the best part of my money, in the end i was glad i did it, yes there is a difference, but not a great deal in it, but the Z87 boards are much better than the Z68 it replaced ;)
