Which 2560x1440p for gaming?

Hello all,

First of I'd like to say that I currently own a, Asus PA246Q. I do NOT see any ghosting or latency issues on this screen for gaming and I am amazed by its color quality. I DO NOT WANT TO SETTLE FOR LESS in terms of visual quality, therefore I am not considering TN panels nor am I interested about 120Hz, not even for the upcoming ROG SWIFT 27".

I have to say I am only gaming, not doing any photo work, so I only use sRGB profile and do not own calibration tools. From what I have read, wide gamut screens are just an overkill so I think I don't mind going for an 8-bit panel since they seem to perform on par with higher end IPS when it comes to sRGB.

That said, my budget for a new screen can go up to 600-700GBP since I am selling my current screen to a friend. My GPU is a single, oc'ed Titan.

After A LOT of reading I have concluded to 3 choices and I would like your opinions and input on what to pick, but I am open to suggestions since I might have missed something. Note I will buy the screen in mid- February.

1rst is the Asus PA279Q. Larger brother of my current screen, with new G-B-r-LED tech. Some reviews say it has terrible G2G performance (digitalversus) others say its average and playable (tomshardware) while others say its very, very good and beats the other IPS in practice (uk.hardware,.info, overclockers.ru). Everyone agrees that the monitor has excellent sRGB profile performance out of the box.

2nd is the Samsung s27b970d. This one is 8-bit, offers a more clean look and is glossy which I don't mind really. It is said to be just as good as the PA279Q in sRGB mode with maybe slightly deeper blacks but definitely has lower latency. OCUK is offering it in 2nd grade for 499GBP therefore I am tempted to buy this. Also, tomshardware says this screen has 102% sRGB coverage while the PA279Q has only 93% in their graphs, really?

EDIT: had to remove last option as it violates forum rules.

Have I got this right? Anything I have missed? I can't make up my mind on what to buy...

Thanks for any input!

I was in your position a few weeks ago - making a decision between those 2 monitors. Ended up going with the Samsung because reflections aren't an issue for me and I wanted more vibrant colours.

Apparently there is a new S27B971DS I found out today some reviews are up and say its worse than the S27B970D plus its more expensive...

Ive got the Iiyama 27inch 1440p monitor here

Its superb for games, as I mostly play FPS (BF4 mainly atm) and I dont notice ghosting or lag. This is someone whos come from a 144hz 1080p monitor with 0 input lag and this must be 0 or damn well near it also.

The colours obviously blow a TN panel out of the water and the black is literally black. Very impressive piece of kit. Only downside is backlight bleed which is very prominent at the 100% brightness it ships at on some displays (mine included).

However! At 30% brightness, which is pretty much calibrated, its pretty much none existent.

I know you've said no but I'd give the ROG swift a chance when it comes out or at least wait for reviews, early reports are saying it's going to be fantastic.

bought one of these while back when they were on offer, brilliant moniter, very nice colours and response isn't too bad but if your a Fps nut then better of waiting for the new asus 120hz.

Hm well after a some more digging I think I lean towards the iiyama X2779QS from ocuk... and well if there is backlight bleeding or squealing noise (both often reported in forums and reviews) I'll RMA, that can pretty much happen with any brand if I'm unlucky ...

I had 2 Iiyama X2779QS monitors in less than a week.

I returned the first one to OcUK on Christmas Eve after having it for a couple of days. The backlight bleed was terrible so I swapped it for another one. That was almost as bad so I returned it soon as OcUK opened after Christmas.
They refunded my money so I decided not to risk a third one and bought the Asus PB278Q instead. It uses Samsung's PLS panel. There is a single tiny patch of backlight bleed but I hardly notice it.
The image quality is much better than my old DGM IPS-2701 and I'm really pleased with it.

If you get an Iiyama without the backlight issues then I'm sure that you won't be disappointed with the image quality. I suspect that I was just unlucky to get 2 from the same "bad batch".

Yeah I've read your thread somewhere around here. And my bet is that there won't be many more faulty ones in the remaining 8 available to buy on ocuk.

If you want quality and reliability then I'd personally go with either Asus or Dell.

I've dropped the idea of buying the Delll U2713HM after hearing all the issues this screen has (panel lottery).

As for the Asus, I don't want to buy a screen that uses PWM, last time I had one (was a Samsung Syncmaster 20" about 3-4 years ago) I could see the flicker. If I buy an Asus, it will be the PA279Q, but then again I don't need a 10 bit screen, I'm only interested in high quality sRGB.

Samsung call it Crystal Clear Glass, note the capitalisation which implies a product name rather than a substance. Perhaps it really is glass, but it certainly doesn't feel like it. I had a spec of dirt behind mine and so I removed the front cover to clean it. The "glass" is very thin, very light and very flexible. It feels and behaves much more like an acrylic than a sheet of glass. Is it Samsung's version of Gorilla Glass?
