What annoys me with these ads is the money they waste sending you pics and updates.

If I give a 5 quid to a tramp I don't want a Christmas card or an update....

No, charity adverts are no worse than any other adverts. Just watch things later and fast forward. Although at some point surly they'll have to stop this somehow, as so many people seem to be doing this.
 
Thread is making me laugh now.

Bizarre how folk watching their flat screen HD TV's surfing through the various channels terrestrial and otherwise, have their day ruined by a 40 second commercial. Yet can take the time to post about it from their internet connected, gadget filled overclocked games machine, feeling outraged when see images of starving kids and are asked if the might help?? I think a little pinch of perspective might not go amiss. (some generalisation there but I'm sure folk will get the point I'm trying to make)

I wonder if they'd give money to..

People are still starving and dyeing of disease worldwide. Charities try and help, some are very good, some are not so. Plus some of the countries that the aid is given to are pretty corrupt, stealing and selling on the aid. That's not the fault of the charity. But it does quite rightly make folk think long and hard about donating. Plus in some instances they have been asking for decades.

Actually I think that is an issue with the charity and its the charities responsibility to change their tact to try and counter such things. Its why I'm selective about who I give to and the only time I give to such charity is if a mate is fund raising.
If the charity do let it get stolen then it just makes the situation worse. It makes the warlords or gangs stronger and richer making the people they are trying to help even worse off.

I gave £1 walking out of Tescos yesterday. Of course a pocket full of noisy change, and the fact that the bloke saw me on the self-checkout had nothing to do with it.

Likewise I've become pretty selective in giving to charities. Basically the Macmillan & BHF, simply because I've seen and experienced what they do first hand. (and do believe charity begins at home to some extent)Occasionally the local dogs home, blankets and bits and bobs. Very occasionally DEC, for urgent relief requests.

LOL.. "Proof" I'm not sure you'd prove or disprove the money given has helped or not? It's a moving target, I'm sure there are areas/projects you could point to that you could say have made a real difference and saved and changed lives. But some of the money/aid given to war torn areas for years will only have dripped through to where it was intended because of corruption at all levels and not made a scrap of difference. (and granted it may well have been 10's of millions £)

It's not as simple as saying "all" donations to charity are pointless.

We've been throwing money at Africa for 30+ years now, and oh look, they're in exactly the same state as they were 30+ years ago. Maybe if we stopped giving them money, and enabling them to live in the desert in crap conditions, they'd stop doing it? Either by moving to more fertile locations or stopping having so many kids they can't support (and increasing the suffering and overpopulation in the process).

Please note, I have no problems with charity going to victims of natural disasters and other one-off, freak events, but when it's an ongoing problem where it makes no difference, at what point do you turn round and say "enough is enough"?

After the 80's famine there are now 3 times as many people living there ! Its will happen again and it will be worse are you surprised?

Giving food and money is a waste of time. Educate and sterilise those that want it.

64x is for wimps, I've got my VU+ Solo2 setup for 128x :D

It's a well worn story, 4 of her 6 children have starved or died of disease. The two that survive will be mothers in their early teens. And so it begins again.
 
Kids in Syria is the new one.

I agree yeah it's utterly crappy situation and no child should be in it, the money helps the kids temporarily then a bunch of religious/political wackjobs go back to shooting each other in the name of Allah.

Humanity is a problem no amount of money will fix.

We used to call them NED's (Non Educated Delinquents) in East London in the early 90's. Then Chav's started doing the rounds towards the late 90's, not sure where it came from either
 
There is no social care in Africa, so you need to have six kids to take care of you when you are older. If the West wants to repeatedly enable this primitive form of pension then why should they refuse (or stop having kids).

It's a pointless investment by the West, the Victorian idea that we could pull them out of poverty and make them into a trading nation is retarded. As soon as they have enough money to feed themselves they restart another tribal war or just steal from each other.
You can look at Detroit for exactly the same process being repeated.

Nobody has a great deal of use for Africans, it's the land that is useful.

China has this sussed, stop trying to feed them and just make use of the workforce, build roads and remove all their raw materials as cheaply as possible. Then laugh at the West trying to help them, exactly the same as the west trying to help the Afghans.
