290 black screen 16,300,000 results
Where as if you search for
AMD 290 Black screen 239,000 results
Nvidia 780 black screen 625,000 results
So as you can see it all depends on how you word it, one version shows the 290 to have massively more hits than the 780, whereas the other way the 780 is worse.
Bottom line Google is not a good way to prove a point.

I R WITH DIAGO. I HADS a 290 and there wasn't a black screen on my pooter at any given time. I fink people are nit turning on dah machine and they fink oh god its a black screen.
So there is no problem I fit one card no problem ok thanks

780 black screen is normally directly after driver install. Saw it a few times on the Titans. Just had to restart and that would be the end of it.
