Fuel consumption + Radio

Get it serviced, get these done..

oil, oil filter
air filter
plugs
gearbox oil
fuel filter
If any of these are well overdue, it will hurt your MPG. They'll be cheap to do on a Focus

(at the point, might as well get coolant changed and brake/clutch/power steering fluid changed too. and pollen filter so it removes smells from the cabin :D)

Check your tyre pressures are correct, if they're too low it can hurt MPG and make them wear out quicker.

The 1.6 in the Focus seems to be very heavy on fuel, I've not seen any better than 35MPG, they're fairly bad really.

MK1?

I beg to differ :p I don't really try to drive economically either. The 45MPG run was done on the A303 to Devon on back, so hardly a nice flat motorway.

For the OP, the 4 speed auto in the MK1 Focus is pretty rubbish and seems to sap economy, no idea if it's down to the ratios or what.

It's an 02 plate, so just slightly before the days when the:

"OMG TEH MPGZZZZZZ!"

marketing brigade really started to get into the swing of things.

I'm fairly certain that 1.6 engine is the one Ford had been using for the last 20 years or so, with absolutely none of the modern enhancements or fuel efficiency technologies that have become more commonplace of late.

Why did they use it? Simple, it was cheap to make and stick in the car, thus making the Focus a fairly cheap car, and maximising profit.

A quick dig around shows that 1.6 engine to be rated at 98BHP, with an "official" MPG figure of 40MPG. 12 years of use, along with less than ideal conditions, plus cold weather will easily make that ~30MPG.

Err, what?

For a start the official figure on the auto is 35, 40 is for the manual.

It's a Zetec-SE (Sigma) engine and was fitted to cars from 1998 onwards, so that makes it 16 years old, so brand new for the Focus. It was revised in 2001/2002. You're making it sound like some sort of old Ford Kent OHV engine, or maybe you are getting confused with the Zetec 1.6 (Zeta) which is crap. There is no reason why an engine shouldn't be as economical, if not even more than it was when it was brand new. Ford have only just replaced it with the 1l Ecoboost.

Just to add, I once got 45mpg on a 300 mile motorway run with my 1.6 Focus. They're pretty economical but slow. :(

my 1.6 2007 focus, 115ps i might add, gets between 29 and 31 mpg. i get about 340miles to a tank.

i do 5 min journeys to and from work.

Heavy car with a small engine.

motorways i can get around 40mpg

Lol at these guys getting epic MPGs out of their 1.6 Focuses :D
I got 39.1mpg from London to Sheffield the other day in my V6..*

*May have been driving like a granny, but still.

Yes when I read all the suffering people go through with a diesel to only get about 5-10 more on a motorway run. :p

Girlfriend's 07 1.6 Focus only manages 32mpg day to day driving, 40 on a very long run if she's careful... even my 3 litre does 26mpg reasonably happily day to day
