Tomb Raider coming to Xbox one and ps4

I dont think anyone blames consoles, how can they be at fault? Its the developers who get the stick for poor console versions. You have to admit there have been some real howlers, like PC games hard coded to prompt for Xbox buttons.

So what if 'porting' is technically the wrong term? If a PC version is poo, its poo regardless of if its been built from the ground up or just copied. We all know what we mean when we say it.

People DO blame consoles, it's a regular occurrence here and on other forums. It's common place to see people bemoaning "console ports", and making claims about how consoles are holding back PC games, if it wasn't for the consoles PC games would be so much more advanced.

As for PC games "hard coded" to prompt Xbox buttons, that's not really what you think it is. The button prompts are simply image assets that haven't been changed, it's not the game thinking in "console mode".

Porting isn't "technically" the wrong term, it is the wrong term. It's not what happens so why say it is? It's because people (most people) actually do think games are "ported", and that the console versions are finished and then the developers press the "port" button which craps out a crappy unoptimised PC "port" of the game.

As for a the PC versions being poor whether they're "copied" or built from the ground up, it shows that you do actually think porting is a thing, because in no instance is a PC build done from the ground up, it'd make absolutely no sense to waste resources doing something like that which isn't at all necessary.

Once the game is complete generally, a version for each platform is compiled and the assets are set up, Xbox button images for the Xbox version, PS button images, and mouse and keyboard images for the controls and so on.

It's simply poor or lazy development, with no porting at all happening.

Wow, that article is all sorts of wrong.

For a start it's not always running at 60FPS....

Yes, the PlayStation 4 build is, on average, twice the framerate of the Xbox One build. Both builds are rendering at native 1080p resolution, and generally look the same in graphical effects (though some minor differences may apply). Performance is a different matter. Both feature unlocked framerates, meaning framerate fluctuates between higher and lower values. The Xbox One build can technically reach around 45 fps, though this performance is generally only achieved during the most empty, simplest environments. For most of your play, and during action scenes, the Xbox One build will sit on around 30 fps. On the other hand, the PlayStation 4 build will attempt to hit 60 fps as often as possible, and does a pretty good job of doing so, but does have slight dips under 60 fps during certain scenarios.

Is the original piece of information.

This isn't really surprising anybody, is it? PS4 - Dedicated Games Console. XB1 - More of an all-in-one media experience, of course the PS4 is going to have an advantage when it comes to game performance, it's more powerful.

Ah, I didn't know that. I think everybody going forward should just assume PS4 counterparts of multi-platform games are going to perform better, it's just logical. I'm just glad I have both systems, MS will get their share of exclusive games and content they always do so I have the XB1 for that.

I have this pre-ordered, never played it last gen but I heard a lot of good things from friends. I watched a dev diary about how they created a 'next gen Lara' they've implemented quite a few cool things, I'd imagine this is basically the PC version with a few extra tweaks.

update to that info

AMENDMENT (24/01): There appears to be a little bit of confusion of the framerates reported, and the fault is our own and our poor wording. We inaccurately used the term “average” when the math, in reality, does not add up. Logistically saying the average is ~30fps implies it exceeds and dips below 30fps, averaging at the number. That is not the case. What our sources have reported is that the listed FPS are roughly the most common targets during performance. So while the Xbox One version can reach ~45fps, for a majority of play it will sit around the ~30fps market, give a few frames. Same goes for the PlayStation 4 build, which in most cases hits around 60fps, take a few frames. Our sources have not confirmed exactly, but our own extrapolation of the information suggests you might say the average (accurate use of the term) Xbox One performance could be ~35fps, meanwhile the average PlayStation 4 performance may be ~55fps. Actual, concrete performance benchmarks will need to wait until the game is out for everyone, as we certainly don’t have them.

We apologise for any confusion from misuse of the term “average”, and hope this amendment better clarifies performance on both systems.

so you either have average of 55 fps which is IMO preferred at 1080 for a game that came out last year and most good gaming rigs could do, or 35 fps average at 1080 .. yeah know which one I'd prefer to play .
