So what's the point of living, if you going to die anyway?

Because we don't know what happens after death, no one can know.

I wish we did know what happens after death. But then it might make people not care about murdering others or it might make people worry too much.

Do you know what happens after you go to sleep, or if you get brain damage like Schumacher?

No. But what we do know if that after you go to sleep you wake up, apart from a minority who die in their sleep.

What I mean is, if you knew that when you died you are reborn as a new born baby, you would probably take a lot more risks and not be scared of dying in your new life. Therefore making your life experience better.

IF however you knew that once you die, that's it, or something terrible happens to you after death, you might spend your whole life worrying about your inevitable death. Therefore making your life experience harder.

Because you get to experience some amazing things and interact with other people in this fascinating world, and are so rare in this universe that it would be daft not to enjoy it as much as possible.

Life your life to the full, seize the moment, always try new things, and never regret anything just learn from your mistakes. Because life is too short, also don't let negativity dwell within it and allow yourself to be taken in by those moments.

Don't worry, be happy, and enjoy those around you and try and give more than your receive - it'll have an effect on the world long after you've passed onto another plane of existence. :)

Human beings are the only creatures on earth who look for a purpose.

You probably think I'm gonna give you one, well I'm not, we suffer, we slave and we expire. That's it, that's life.

We live because it's marginally better than dying, if you look for a purpose or you want your life to mean something, you're **** out of luck. Even if you did something great it'll have been forgotten in years to come.

No, you need to accept we are here out of chance, a *******ised science experiment created by the expanse of the universe - odds were our creator and we as a planet exist on life support. What you have to remember is that in accepting this, it is no reason to not enjoy life.

People think I'm a pessimist, I'm not, I just believe it's poor practice to expect the best and be disappointed than expect the worst and be surprised. Provided you take pleasure in the little things in life and don't ever expect anything from anyone it'll be worth it.

At the point of death consciousness disperses just like the atoms which make up your body, I mean the atoms are consciousness, everything is. You go back to the 'pool' so to speak and eventually you'll return as 'Fred' or 'Rita' etc. I think at the point of death we are being deceived somehow into reincarnating, being 'recycled' back into the physical so to speak.

I think life is a training ground, where one must build up their own inner personal power, which generally means having no attachments, such as family etc, as I think they may be used as a tool to trick you back into the reincarnation loop. If acheived you're able to transcend the life/death cycle and retain your individuality in more subtle dimensions.

Remember when you're feeling very small and insecure
How amazingly unlikely is your birth
And pray that there's intelligent life somewhere up in space
'Cause there's bugger all down here on Earth!

Excellent post Mr White,

My son has started to ask the life/death questions and that will help greatly into explaining what it's about.

Thanks

Yes, yes we can know. Nothing, literally nothing, you die, your brain stops functioning and you cease to exist.

All you leave behind is a pile of meat, maybe a few organs can be reused, the rest is basically dog food. And a load of meaningless possessions.

I hold a type of Buddhist view that our spirit gets reborn into a different life. Start over again with no recollection of our former lives.

Keeps me happy.

I sussed my meaning of life a loooong time ago.

Simply have as much fun as possible, at as little the expense of others as possible.

Also known as "Have a laugh, but don't be a douche about it."

My view is very similar, I have a theory that your "soul" for lack of a better term goes back to the moment of your birth and you live your life all over again.

This would also explain Deja Vu. ;)

I know its stupid but it's my stupid! :p

I envy Lysander and people like him in many ways, I wish I was able to go through life thinking that there was something more or something after but physics tells us there is not, it does not allow for spirits or ghosts, or afterlife. I guess its just some peoples way of coping with the fact that this actually is it.

It's the only way to live :).

It depends on what you mean the point of living, biological life is conditioned to reproduce, the entire universe is a system of evolution - ranging from the stars to us.

Really, I don't believe in any singular purpose to existence - we are simply matter. But if I had to give something, then I'd say the point of life is to die in part (but to pass any positive benefit to the universe before you do) - as death is required for advancement & progress in all forms of the universe.

Life has more mean & less meaning that people realise, we are utterly insignificant - but our origins & perhaps are destinies (of the species) could have a great impact on the universe (given enough time).

I've always found the scientific view of reality far more majestic, meaningful & impressive than simplistic ghosts.

Dr. Neil DeGrasse Tyson puts it well :)

“The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.” said by Mark Twain.

I guess lots of people like Op need to keep searching for the why.

Edit*
^Be sure to check out Tyson's new Cosmos series starting this year. It's gonna be good :)

You were born out of the energy of the universe and although you have not always been in this form you have always been here just waiting for the correct configuration to "wake up".

We are all like pinholes that open for a brief moment and allow the universes a way to experience it's self. You are the universe....so why not have a cool experience!
