NVIDIA still holds the OpenGL crown on Linux; AMD is getting better though

If you are a Linux user who prefers to use OpenGL graphics there is still a huge benefit to choosing NVIDIA over AMD. The tests Phoronix just completed show that the GTX680, 770 and 780 all perform significantly faster than the R9 290 with even the older GTX 550 Ti and 650 GPUs outperforming AMD's best in some benchmarks. That said AMD is making important improvements to their open source drivers as that is where they are lagging behind NVIDIA. The new RadeonSI Gallium3D for the HD7000 series shows significant performance improvements when paired with the new 3.13 kernel though still falling a bit behind the Catalyst driver they are now much closer to the performance of the proprietary driver. For older cards the performance increase is nowhere near as impressive but some certain benchmarks do show this Gallium3D driver to provide at least some improvements. Pity the Source engine isn't behaving properly during benchmarks which is why no tests were run on Valve's games but that should be solved in the near future.

"In new tests conducted last week with the latest AMD and NVIDIA binary graphics drivers, the high-end AMD GPUs still really aren't proving much competition to NVIDIA's Kepler graphics cards. Here's a new 12 graphics card comparison on Ubuntu."

AMD putting the time in is a good sign :)

Wake me up when this actually means something Gregorio. :)

There is many users out there who like the idea of a free OS and happily use Ubuntu/Linux and with AMD putting the push in to this, it is becoming a viable option for both nVidia and AMD users. Microsoft are great but a free alternative is always a plus in my book.

Sorry if it bores you Matt but you could have just ignored it.

No it doesn't bore me, but i just look around for all the AAA OpenGL games and i don't find any. Nonetheless i agree its good that AMD are improving their drivers in this area, but ill be more interested when this actually means something useful for Next Gen gaming.

AAA games will come now that the effort is being put in by all parties involved. I think that a free OS that is gaming focused would be very interesting to people who only really use their PCs for gaming and browsing the Web.

Compared to all the AAA Mantle games?

The thing about OpenGL is that it can (already) be used by a ****-load more people than WILL BE able to use Mantle.

And yeah Mantle is 'open' so COULD be supported by all vendors (where as OpenGL IS supported by all vendors) and has a number of games ANNOUNCED. But since we've only played one of those games we don't know if they're any good. Sorry if I in the minority but I'm not going to buy a AAA game that is actually ****. Let's hope that BF4 isn't the standout title in the list of games that WILL support Mantle.

Mantle sounds great, but I'm sure back at the time OpenGL and PhysX weren't marketed as good technologies that will be under utilised. Why are we taking it for granted that Mantle will be anything more?

Also, how is Mantle on Linux coming along? Which games have been announced for Mantle on Linux?

OpenGL isn't perfect, we all know that, but with AMD and Nvidia putting the effort in it can hopefully improve. And if it improves on Linux, hopefully it will improve on Windows. This does then give developers an API that is an alternative to DirectX that supports multiple OSes and multiple GPU vendors.

yeah, because plants vs. zombies and an online shooter that hardly anyone plays due to bugs count as AAA

Pay no heed Andy. AMD are certainly getting their hands firmly into OpenGL, so this is only a good sign for the masses, regardless of using it or not. I can get W8 for around £80 but can get Ubuntu/SteamOS for free, so with this in mind, it could potentially give nVidia and AMD users an alternative.

I see the benefits and hope others do.

Not getting into debates about Mantle here sorry boys, we already have a massive thread for that. I'll happily change my opinion when we have some decent OpenGL games coming out or even just announced. If there are some big titles about to appear or that have been announced on OpenGL that im unaware of then i apologise and stand corrected. Please correct me if im wrong.

I'm now wondering if I should go into every thread that doesn't interest me and tell everyone it doesn't interest me?

Its not against the rules to express an opinion, even if its one that people don't want to hear. The key is to say your piece and let it go. ;)

Which part of this was opinion? :)

Should it be spelt 'opinion' or 'baiting'? ;)

See my post below that post you quoted for clarification. OpenGL benchmarks are not that important because there are no new games using OpenGL.

TL : DR It means nothing that AMD have improved OpenGL drivers/performance as there are no games to make use of it currently.

Old OpenGL games like Left 4 Dead 2 run fine on my gpu's with more fps than i need.

If steam OS takes off this could be very good for PC gamers.

OpenGL runs in Linux, windows and iirc ps4 so porting could be less bothersome. Except for us XB1 owners.
