I'd like to book a hotel for 2 nights Friday-Sunday on the 7th Feb

Just wondering how it works, is it worth me booking on a popular site sooner, or leaving it until last minute (48 Hours before) or is it all just a big gamble?

Any recommendations on a VFM decent hotel from experience would be great!

For most hotels, price increases closer to the date (especially this soon). Hiltons are likely to offer good value for money (within a 4-5* category) at the moment as they have quite a good sale on weekends at the moment (bookable until 31st). Hotels in Canary Wharf and, to a lesser extent, the City tend to be cheap at the weekends, but obviously are a fair distance from tourist attractions.

Few that I can vouch for: Melia Regents Park, Thistle Marble Arch, The Trafalgar, Sofitel Waterloo Place, The Athenaeum, ME Strand, Charing Cross Hotel and The Waldorf Hilton. Generally I'd look to book as far in advance as possible; you can sometimes pick up some cheap deals on Late Rooms and the like, but your choice becomes limited and you can end up stuck with some crap place in the arse end of Belgravia (voice of experience :p).

Normally I book either via Expedia/Egencia or American Express.

lastminute.com look at the top secret deals and paste the description into google. You'll be able to work out which hotel it is and the rate is usually decent.

I found The Waldorf a bit meh when I was there last week, very nice lobby and bar area but the rooms were pretty dated.

I think it's overly-hyped. The ME is a much nicer hotel and is only about 100 yards away, but compared to some of the dumps I've stayed in the Waldorf is still a decent hotel. :)

Nothing in London is particularly far from anything else - Docklands perhaps if 5 minutes on the tube is too much for you, but the City is pretty much central.

I'm looking for somewhere to stay in the Covent Garden area in May for 2 nights. Got a budget of about £250 so if anyone's stayed around there recently for that sort of price please let me know.

That's quite a modest budget for the area if you want a hotel.

Premier Inn Leicester Square perhaps.

The Fabulous Spa Hotel near Covent Garden & West End Secret Hotel on Last Minute is the Grange Holburn hotel which is just round the corner from Covent Garden / Leicester Square. Have a look on Lastminute at it and compare the prices with other booking sites.

Also you didn't say which two nights in May. If it's Friday/Saturday then it's time to bend over. If the hotel isn't part of the destination then just stay somewhere that you can get to easily on the tube / nightbus depending on how late you're going to be and spend the extra cash on food and booze.

We stayed in Bayswater a few weeks ago, 3 nights for £265, fri sat sun, even managed to park right outside the hotel from sat night. The tube was a minute walk away, 2 different lines so could use central or i think circle line. Also buses every few minutes. I'd rather pay a few hundred less and stay just outside the centre and use tube.

Change of plan! Our friends had a special offer at a hotel in Hyde Park (Days Inn) which they've gone for. I don't really fancy staying there though so anyone stayed at any of the hotels in the Hyde Park area? It's going to be be a Fri/Sat night stay.
