Bit of a mad decision going from an extremely capable Windforce 290X to two Sapphire 290X Tri X, but I had my reasons. These are my reasons, perhaps beyond logic and sense, but reasons none the less. :)

I have been wanting to go Crossfire and get a 4k monitor some months down the line so having the two cards seems ideal. Another shallow reason is I fancied having the yellow of the cards marry up with the yellow on my motherboard. Which won't make much sense at all reading on... I also mine on the cards and the noise of two 290X's going at it combined with the PC being in the living room, well, I was given a firm no by the long haired general. I think I will get a few days before I will have to give up. Plus, my RAM is red! :)

This in addition with my urge to watercool means I will soon be donning a pair of EK blocks and with Gigabyte using a non reference I was never fully convinced of the blocks matching up. With these new cards I know that they are 100% reference design underneath. They are also mining beasts, hitting well over 960 khash each with little tinkering.

Anyway, enough of me, here are some pics.

Shiny boxes:

Peeling the protection of gives me a guilty feeling:

Current Windforce 290X will have to make way:

Here's some GPU power! The Tri X's are longer than the Windforce. I was getting worried if they would fit in the case. Like any good consumer I didn't bother to check before ordering:

Phew, it fits:

Just! My Fortress FT02B made the 5850's I ran look small, GPU's are getting big these days.

Second card in. Plenty of breathing room for the two:

I am happy with the look. Although I did find myself looking at yellow RAM last night. Can anyone guess what colour watercooling fluid I will be using? :)

Nice. Welcome to the Crossfire club, because ones not enough.

Lovely looking cards those Sapphires.

Probably the nicest 290 series cards on the market atm (I know the xfx ones are nice but xfx!)

Is it me or is there far too many 'x' & 'tri' in a lot of this gen of cards, confusing the life out of me :o

Tell us how you rate them compared to the Gigabyte please and did you just have one Gigabyte or two?

I will do some benchmarking later but on the whole I prefer them. They look better, the fan unit feels more solid and lack of having to use a Crossfire bridge is an excellent feature. As said, the hashrate is immense. :)

Oh I completely agree, these and the MSI gaming feel extremely well put together and the results speak for themselves. The Tri-X is probably my favourite cooler too as it can be quiet and cool, or loud and very cool. :D

Fortress FT02B and yes I get issues unless I lower the voltage on the cards when mining. But gaming is fine with the side on or off.
