AMD improving nicely on Linux and the OpenGL platform

Well well, looks like there is something new coming from Valve :D

Source engine 2 and Half life 3 is getting mentioned quite a lot but that I am taking with a pinch of salt, as I don't want to get my hopes up :D

Check out this before and after screenie of L4D2

Are you allowed to link to other forums Greg?
It does look better, not stupidly fantastic though. Hopefully that's just because they're using it with an old game rather than that being the limit of what it can do.
Still, quite possible that this will be running on OpenGL. I'm sure it won't count in the "what new games does OpenGL have?" arguments as it's only announced and not released. Or more likely because it's only rumour and not official. Or possibly even that they've not really announced a game, just the engine.

Still, if the first game using this only has to be compared to the first game using Mantle (which may be BF4, depending on delays) then it should be able to walk away with the "better game" title blindfolded and walking backwards. (Yes, I'm not a fan of BF4 :))

Could be nice to see things like Half-Life 3, Team Fortress 3, Portal 3, Left 4 Dead 3, CounterStrike 2/3/whatever and, uh, all the other big Source engine games (you know, that one with the thing, and that other one, etc.) use this.

Brilliant news, especially as by the look of it, previous source titles and be ported over to the new engine with added extra beauty.

Gabe Newells inbox and bank account will explode when HL3 is announced, will be the biggest selling PC game of all time without a doubt.

I hate Half-Life 2 (more than BF4, which I don't hate). Not gonna fall into the trap of buying that one! Unless it's in an Orange box with TF3, Portal 3 and hopefully Left 4 Dead 3.

At the time hl2 blew me away, iirc it was on a pentium 4 (3.06ghz ht edition!) With an fx5200, the water in that game still looks good by todays standards.

I'd welcome a new L4D3 game on OpenGL gladly. Loved L4D2 and put over 1000 hours into the multi player of it. However it will have to improve graphically by a long way from L4D2.

Spot on about the water in HL2 PG Tips. Well ahead of its time.

L4d2 wasn't that bad graphically, considering it was released in 2009 and built on framework even older, saying that I never had much chance to take in all the detail when I'm running away from a witch like a little girl :D

Yeah it was fine at the time. I went back to play it briefly a year ago though and it did look dated. It actually looked nicer with AMD's long forgotten Wide Tent AA. Added a lovely blur to the image which improved the cartoony graphics a ton for me. How i miss Wide Tent AA. :sob

I have never played L4D (one that slipped through the net) but if the makeover is anything to go by, I wouldn't mind giving it a play. I absolutely loved all the HL games including Blue Shift. Even now the GFX holds up pretty well for these older classics. I am just begging/pleading for HL3 to be real. When Valve leaked those games, I believe they did it on purpose to get people excited.... It worked for me anywho :D

Does this only apply to standard Linux distros or will it effect OpenGL in OSX too? I'm sure all the Fisher Price owners with AMD cards would be happy with a free boost to gaming performance.

Not sure on that but will try and find out.

Streaming at 2560x1440 with Steam in home streaming. 30fps sucks but not bad.

That screenshot is titillating. Like genuinely...!

You could argue it doesn't look truely next gen, but the thing with Source games is that they're normally just fantastic games anyway. Especially L4D2. So to get a new L4D game and potentially HL3 in Source 2.0 is hard not to get a lil' excited about

it will depend, unlike Linux or Windows, the version of OpenGL is baked in to the OS with OSX, which currently supports OpenGL 4.1 (and not 4.4)
so source 2 / HL3 will need to have a backwards compatible path for it to run on OSX

(or if you mean drivers, then no, OSX drivers will be specific to OSX)

Where is the games list you guys mention? I would like to take a look and decide if I'll try the ISO for my older machine. I already paid for windows 8, so mantle is the key for me :)

Do Apple still do a lot of their own driver work? It would explain why OSX drivers are do terrible.

Im not sure they do their own driver work, but they certainly like to keep a firm hold on what gets released and so driver updates take forever to be released, I dont think they even allow a monthly release schedule if you wanted to

For me I'd rather have a good game than a good looking game. If it can do both that'd be fantastic, but if I had to prioritise out of the two I'd go gameplay over graphics. (Probably why I'm not such a fan of BF4)
