XFX DD 290X benched at 4K - Stomps on 780Ti's

About the pcb design, I need to do some better comparison work, but 290 pcb is near identical to the ref 7970 pcb with exception to extra caps and some in different places, the extras on the 290 board even have blank slots on the 7970 counterpart. I still need to check the cooler mounting hole locations, as I only noticed this last night. But it could be possible that the cooler is basically that of a ref 7970.

Yep its the same cooler, nothing has changed from when i got my msi 7970 reference. :)

On one hand it explains to good pricing on them (no real extra r&d or manufacturing costs) and on the other could explain why things get a little toasty.

It does give me a bit more confidence in the noise levels though, I had a pair of ref 7970's on an open air bench for 3 months around a meter away from me with a 1:1 fan profile and wasn't bothered by the noise.

I don't find the noise that bad. The extremely low cost helps with that somewhat. They'll need to redesign the cooler next time around though. I think it will be the last time we see this specific shroud.

in short;

BF4 4k Ultra 4xMSAA;
290X 4-way (uber) 74.1
780ti OCed 69.7

Bioshock Inf Ultra 4k;
290X 4-way (uber) 78.4
780ti OCed 95.8

Crysis3 4k Ultra 4xMSAA;
290X 4-way (uber) 52.1
780ti OCed 61.6

Heaven 4k;
290X 4-way (uber) 60.8
780ti OCed 64.6

these would be pretty playable and more so if you knocked off the 4xAA and went with something like SMAA
I rarely dipped below 60fps in Crysis3 at 7680x1440 with 3 Titans and SMAA, so it shows how much of a hammering AA gives at high res

Honest question, they say in the article the main reason why these cards are faster than the reference ones is they don't throttle. If you're going to watercool them, why not just get reference 290x's? You're paying for the custom cooler which you're just going to remove...
Makes sense. That would reduce stuff like coil whine right (my reference has a small amount of coil whine which you can hear without the fan).

Of the Oled tvs shown at ces this year, the types of prices being thrown about were still £15k plus
OLED is a loooong way off being consumer friendly, where as 4k Tvs are from sub-£1k already...

i still wouldn't touch a 4k, (for other reasons) i would rather get the last of the Panasonic Plasmas late this year and then switch to OLED in 3 years.

finally, you'll never see any HD TV broadcast in 4K... EVER !!!!!!

the 4K is a waste of time for tv/gaming at any size from 42'' to 65''

wish I could afford a second 290.
ah well ;)

i wish i could get another 7970 but now it's not worth it and this latest 290x isn't enough power for my next upgrade, so i'm sort of stuck, not sure when to upgrade again, but i still enjoy the posts:D

This does interest me as i keep thinking about my next monitor move which will be proper 4K i'm sure, but when some are actually available and for a decent price. Also, when i don't need more than 2 GPUs!! lol

It'd be one of the purchases that should last me quite some time, so i'm ok with spending a lot.

4K like 3d will be just another fad.

they are too expensive and as said no tv shows will use them or broadcast.

yea the 4k monitor is fine, it's the 4K TV that's daft, it's a bit like the 3D TV craze that we had two years ago, it wont last

large 4K tv is LED/ LCD based and that's where the faults lie, it will be totally redundant as soon as OLED is cheap enough...

it's all very complicated, because i game via tv only.

yea but what these guys dont realise is 4K TV is Backlight LED, so it suffers from backlight bleeding/ uniformity issues/ lack of true contrast and gaming lag.

upping the Res does not solve these basic tech issues, to solve this you either need a Panny Plasma (the best model) or wait for OLED.

we've discussed this often on our other forum, there is no way way around this.....we are in a dead zone right now, the end of Panasonic Plasma and waiting for Panasonic OLED.

Aren't netflix already preparing to roll out 4k content?

*You* wouldnt no, but the simple truth is, some people will need to buy a new Tv in the next few years, and 4k is going to be something you get on premium tv's whether you like it or not

OLED sub 1k prices is going to be more than 3 years away because even sony and Panasonic have given up on it in favour of 4k
