I'm looking to build a family PC since the current one we have are way too slow and old. The PC will mainly be used for browsing, streaming, music, general office work and sometimes casual gaming e.g. those basic games like Bejewelled etc. Would be great if the build was quiet too.

I have Win7 OS, a Asus M5A97 EVO R2.0 motherboard and optical drive. Also got a pair of Geil 4GB ram and a AMD Athlon II X4 620 CPU but not sure if they got affected by my old dead PSU; in case they did die would be great if alternatives are provided so I can always refer back here and get it :)

The build will be using my old Antec 300 and I got spare HDDs as well and since it won't be heavily used I think an SSD would be kinda overkill maybe.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply but in my first post I mentioned that I got a Asus M5A97 EVO R2.0, which was to replace my old gaming build since the motherboard for that one died. Don't think I can return it to the place I bought from since I got it for more than two weeks. I want to try and use what I have currently before spending the extra money :)

this has got to be a situation where an SSD would probably be the ideal upgrade, I have seen many older systems given a new lease of life with an SSD. IMO upgrading to an SSD gives more obvious gains than a processor upgrade in general PC use.

Why are GTX 650s and R9 270s being recommended for playing bejewelled?

I'd honestly just put a 120GB SSD in with the existing stuff you have. It would be very fast for a very small amount.

bejewelled must be played at 1080p 60+ fps on ultra!!1!!!

but seriously, the APU builds should more than suffice for what he seems to be describing :p

Lol this isn't for me but for my parents/as a general home PC. I got my own gaming build for actual gaming :P

I have considered SSD before but wasn't sure if it's worth it since the PC won't be used often. Based on what's posted so far, I guess I'll be going for the cheapest option, even more so if I decided to include an SSD to it :)

Tweaked it a bit and decided on the following eventhough its over-budget with the SSD included ;P :

YOUR BASKET
1 x AMD Piledriver FX-6 Six Core 6300 Black Edition 3.50GHz (Socket AM3+) Processor - Retail £83.99
1 x MSI GeForce GTX 650 Black Knight OC 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £79.99
1 x Samsung 120GB SSD 840 EVO SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7TE120BW) £79.99

1 x SuperFlower Amazon 450W "80 Plus Bronze" Power Supply £35.99
