My House was burgled

Check your policy, some insurers can be a bit picky about paying out if the property was left unattended and not properly secured.

Yes, it's definitely wise to check your policy carefully before filing any reports/claims. I'm not advocating fraud, but for obvious reasons insurance companies will always see if they can avoid paying out at all or only making a derisory offer. Lack of adequate security systems and locks, unlocked doors and windows, unattended cash not covered unless it's locked away - there can be all sorts of restrictions that could undo a claim.

Out of interest how much did the CCTV and lights cost? and how does the CCTV work - where is the video sent?

Im having 4 infrared cameras and 3 security lights, along side these im having a fully wireless alarm system fitted.

The cameras will be linked to a box under my tele, ive got a 1tb hhd to put in it. It will also be connected to my router so i can access them from anywhere.
I am probably looking at about £1500 - £1800 (depending on which cameras we go for) for the whole system, luckily my wife's cousin is a sparky so he is supplying and fitting it for us.

My wife spoke to them this morning, we are insured with Allianz so they are pretty good, told them about the window and its not an issue and its the same for the door, because its an internal door.

That's something anyway. Really feel for you, can't imagine what it feels like to have your living space violated like that, hope I never will.

Not any more, a little late and an expensive lesson but tomorrow I have a guy coming to install an alarm, cctv and lights to the property.

I'd buy better locks and a way of reminding myself to use them before I spent money on recording a video of the person robbing me. If you don't remember to lock your doors and close windows then will you remember to set an alarm?

You've been mugged, had your car stolen, and now your house has been burgled?! Poor guy.

Hope you get everything sorted quickly.

Tell me about it, the mugging was about 11 years ago, a group of us went to see the Offspring at the Brixton academy, 2 dropped out so we decided to sell the tickets outside on the night, we were approached by some guys so we wnet round a corner to do the deal, where they helped themselves to the rest of the tickets at knife point.

Bad times.

Thats why i said that i made it easy for them, my surroundings made me feel secure and i got lazy, not a mistake ill be making again.

Damn, hope insurance pays out as you'd expect and the things can be replaced.

On the plus side no-one was hurt.

What security system are you going with? When I get my own property this year, one of my first things is to install a CCTV system and Alarm and am fully expecting to invest a decent sum into doing so.

You left your window open you say?

yeah you know the old wooden type ones? they have like a metal bar with four or five holes in and you can prop then over a peg on the frame? well i left it on the one closest to the class so it was only open a crack.

Just to air the room because thats where the cats litter tray is. I blame the cat.

I think you'd be better off without the CCTV and putting the money into new windows that aren't secured by a bar, and an extractor for the room the cat dumps in. There are very few situations where a homeowner needs CCTV.

CCTV system and Alarm and lighting.

If the insurance dont pay out then thats life, can only blame myself for getting lazy and take it on the chin. Im off to a shop later to pick up another Nexus 7 so ill have something for my flights and lazing around on holiday. The rest can wait.

Kill the cat. No more burglaries.

at about 4am this morning when i couldnt sleep because i was listening out for burglars, this seemed like a logical choice.

at first i didnt even realise i had been burgled because when i walked in the kitchen and all the doors were open i thought nothing of it because the cat like to open doors and drawers and quite often i come in and the place looks like its been ransacked. It was only when i went upstairs 10 minutes later that i saw the mattress has been tossed and the jewellery boxes all over the bed it finally hit me, thats when i ran downstairs to find the back door open and other stuff missing :(

Feel for you dude, I've been mugged before and the feeling of violation it leaves behind is difficult. I cannot image how it must feel like to have had someone in your home.

I had trouble with insurance company afterwards but eventually they replaced the items I lost during the mugging. Hopefully you won't have to go through that too with yours.

aslong as you insured you should be okay that area.

police will come say they probably wore gloves yada yada no chance of catching them and leave shortly after.

My ex and kids were burgled last Saturday, perp took almost the same stuff as in the op but swap the camera for a rubbish 5 year old laptop, anyway the police were there promptly and called forensics, they caught the guy within 24 hours, the police were great apart from asking my lad why he was off school, he answered it's Saturday, lol but the dude works odd shifts in a stressful job so I'll give him that one.

Thank god the crack/smack/dealer/pimp/batterer moved into the street prompting the police to put a CCTV camera in the street, imho the forensics came in the hope pimp was involved in some way, he wasn't, the burgler was seen entering the backs of the houses a few houses one way down the st and exiting a few doors up, also some builders asked him what he was doing so were able to give a good description.

If heroin was legal it would cost an addict about a tenner a week to support a good habit, it's much cheaper to make than ibuprofen.

Im having the cctv for the simple reason that it improves the chances of a positive ID of the perp. And more importantly it makes me and my wife feel better.

I feel really bad for you, must be a horrible experience to have your house broken into by thieving scumbags. At least you and your wife were not in and asleep at the time, that would have added another level of anxiety I would think.

I'm glad you are both safe and all the best with insurance and hopefully the police find them, even if they don't karma will find 'em eventually!
