Hey guys,

It's my friend's 30th birthday soon and he's a big Whiskey fan. He's partial to Whiskey in general but he mainly drinks Jack Daniels.

Does anyone have any suggestions around the £30-40 mark for something a bit more special?

If he likes JD then a bottle of Gentleman Jack would probably be right up his street, I got a bottle for my birthday last year and it's very nice.

The merit of Jack Daniels is it's not a refined whisky, bourbon in general is not a refined expensive "age it for 30 years" type of product.

I'd recommend Makers Mark, Bulleit or Woodford reserve.

Guys who drink JD mainly are rarely scotch guys so I'd stick with the safe bet and go for one of those three.

But if you did venture into Scotch, Macallan 10 year (Sherry Oak) is a good one for getting into it.

If he likes Whiskey, perhaps you could educate him into drinking something better, like Whisky?

Maybe a 'sampler' set, possibly home-made, of several miniatures of some scottish whiskies, around the darker / peaty single malts. (Macallan 10 year old sherry is excellent)

Not actually being serious with the whisky snobbery, I just find a lot of people who drink JD drink it because its their first intro to some whiskey/whisky, and haven't really explored the different types and flavours available much.

Bang on, JD isn't a bad whisky, it's just expensive for what you get.
