Which survival game for a noob?

I haven't really gamed much in the last few years and when i have its been mostly singleplayer stuff but i'd quite like to get in to something multiplayer.

I really like the idea of a survival game rather than a straight up shooter but as i understand it they all have quite a steep learning curve. So, given my utter noobness would I be better off beginning with Rust, DayZ Mob (i'd need to buy Arma2) or Dayz Standalone?

Any other advice/suggestions would be most welcome.

Cheers

Rust..
cheapest. to buy
easily the best too play
when you die you still have the house you built..unlike dayz you loose it all.
24/7 servers
Guys making the game seem too be concentrating on removing any hackers/aimbots as they appear

rust is fantastic and the people making it get in touch with the community too which i personally think is fantastic

i would give my rust away if im honest.

its basically a field some rocks and you build stuff. thats it.there's a pig a deer a wolf a bear a zombie (zombies are being removed soon ) graphics are terribad.

very very basic at most it should be a few quid how he got away with charging 15 .

id say pick dayz or wait for the forest soon which will blow rust away and is stunning.

Have to agree, Rust is terrible.

Id suggest Dayz or go with Arma 3 for breaking point and you have all the other stuff to play as well like wasteland, life servers and ofc Arma 3 and its missions etc.

Rust lol.

Dg, ease up a bit pal, your becoming slightly fanboy ish with regards to DayZ.

DayZ is empty with regards to content, lots of bugs, server hopping and combat logging and much more. But offers more potential.

Rust offers more content, but offers little little potential. Has major hacking issues and bug exploitation issues.

They are both great games in their own way, just read both the threads and decide.

for pick up and playability, RUST. simple to get into and learn.

not really correct (and strange thing to say considering how little there actually is to do in DayZ Stand Alone), there's quite a lot more to it. gun play, pvp etc, crafting etc

DayZ mod I'd avoid like the plague, but that's just me. I could never get along with the contrived inventory system, and the fact when you run or are being chased by zombies I kept expecting to hear the Benny Hill chase music, just felt weird (that may have changed though as I haven't played the mod in a long time.

DayZ stand alone, is not too bad considering it's in early Alpha stage. Server restarts are a pain though. Inventory system is much easier than the mod. and the game itself does look purdy. but I am finding it boring at the minute as you really just wander about picking stuff up and hoping not to get shot by KOS clowns. (that said KOS clowns are the bane of most of these survival games).

The Forest is looking very promising, but then most of these games do depending which youtube videos you watch!

if you want an easy to get into game grab Rust, but keep an eye on DayZ Stand Alone. if the devs don't get bored it has potential. just not really for me at the moment

DayZ the controls are clunky, the learning curve is extremely steep and the penalties for attempting anything other than hiding in a corner are severe - dying means you lose EVERYTHING and must start again, which is extremely frustrating.

I'd go for rust.

Empty servers are good to start with, but as soon as you've got over the "OO I CAN BUILD A HUGE MANSION" phase, you'll get very lonely very fast.

Official servers are in another league, you're house is pretty much guaranteed to be raided every night. How you build your house will be what determines weather they get to all your loot or not...

A happy medium is a low population server (there's a couple that the OCUK lot use I think - check the thread for details). Enough people on at once to form several alliances and camps, but small enough that there's a chance your house might not be found if you build it somewhere intelligent. IMO this is the most fun, and makes the game not quite as frustrating but keeps the PVP competition.

In Rust you start with a few craftable items, the rest you must learn by studying blueprints or finding the item you want to be able to make and then researching it. Any recipes you've learnt will persist through death, which is a nice and makes getting back on your feet again after dying much easier.

It's an extremely addictive game with intuitive controls that make it extremely easy to pick up quickly, and for pre-alpha it's surprisingly bug free from my experience. Most of the OCUK guys are friendly too, so if you hop on a server with us we'll help you get started!

If you want to play now I would say Rust as it has a shed ton of content to mess about with. DayZ has very little to do atm but over the next year will be quite special I believe. You could buy Rust now and DayZ 5-6 months down the line, just an idea.

no fanboy just say it as it is. dayz is better. rust has bad graphics and apart from base building nothing else. you may disagree that's your opinion. i have mine. just because it differs doesn't make me a fanboy

Minecraft has bad graphics, bf 4 has awesome graphics. Shows how much that argument matters.

I wouldn't bother with any of them, they are in alpha and will most likely disappoint you at this stage. There is yet to be a recommended final product.

Have you not had a look at 7 Days to Die OP? It's not bad at all considering it is also in Alpha.

But out of the one's you mentioned I would have said grab Arma 2 Combined Operations and playing some DayZ mod and the loads of other mods that are out there. DayZ: SA is really only worth it if you have the spare cash to blow on early access and are prepared to watch and wait for it's progress.

Ok thanks for all the input guys.

I think I might go with Rust despite the graphics being 2 decades old. Sounds more noob friendly and less frustrating.

Does Arma3 have any decent mods? The concept of Altis Life (or whatever its called) seems interesting but possibly rubbish.

Survival mods? Breaking Point. But Arma 3 is amazing as it has a ton of missions as well, then you have wasteland. I think you can buy it for £20-£25 on cdkey sites.

I meant mods in general, not just survival games. I'll have a look at wasteland now.
