As some people may know i was made redundant in november last year iv had an interview recently with a company and its come out like this

Ill be working 60 hours per week in a location an hour and a half away from home which ill be driving to and from daily.

So 13 hour days, 6 days a week essentially. My pay is 5.03 an hour no pay for travel time and no travel expenses. I drive a diesel car and its all motorway driving but id say id easily be using 20 pounds of fuel a day approx so 120 a week to even fuel my car and id be getting 300 a week before tax and NI.

So id earn 120 pounds approx after tax and expenses for 60 hours :/

I know a job is a job and its experience as i was only an apprentice its only positive experience really but i don't value myself that low to a company. What is the general opinion on this? My Job role is an Electrical Controls and Instrumentation Technician

My apprenticeship has been completed by an alternative route im waiting on my trade papers also and i am in no unions etc. Fresh out of my time still working my way into this stuff

Unless you live in Mordor I'd aim for a job closer to home for that pay, unless the experience is really worth it - but as I'm unfamiliar with the field only you can give an indication of that.

Thats despressingly low for that workload. How long would you be at that wage for?

I'm guessing you think you've exhausted the local possibilities?

Also, does it have fixed pay increases over time - good promotion prospects (which are would be able to obtain & within a short time frame), making the poor return for time spent only a temporary measure?.

12 Month contract no negotiations on it, ECITB forced them to offer the position up to us so its come at the lowest cost to themselves. Its been forced so i can't take them through court for a breach of contracts as there protecting my previous employers.

It unfortunately doesn't look too good. Local options are yet to be looked at properly but i was told in December this job was on offer it looked pretty good until i had the interview earlier this month and got confirmation this was what was happening. I could work at mcdonalds for more money but its about sticking to what i know which i wanted to do. But maybe not for such low cash

A year does flyby sometimes and in the future a year will seem like a small inconvenience. As someone in their 30s I can assure you doing a bit of graft in your teens to get you places in your 20s, is a good idea. I wish I had.
However, that said, only and only if the merit out weighs the disadvantage.
If doing it gains you an experience necessary to move up faster than anyone else then do it.

I'm guessing he's young so no, it's bang on minimum wage for 18 to 20 year olds.

This. Bang on minimum but once you take into account my fuel costs (iv not even taken into account my food and drink but id do this at home or at work) i don't earn much more than a pound an hour if you take my travel time into account as working also

Seems like this may have to get shot down. Me declining this job though would mean my contract to ecitb to be over. But if the insultingly low offers like this are all im going to get ill stick to a personal job search

I'd try to talk to ECITB in all honesty, what they're asking of you is unrealistic and they must surely be aware of this. Sure, there's being keen to do a certain type of work and having enthusiasm for it, but this would only drag you down - as you rightly say, you'd earn more flipping burgers.

Hope you get it sorted out fella!

Firstly I'd suggest you try to source something closer. It's not really the companies fault you have to travel is it? - That should not justify an increased salary.

Secondly I thought the EU made 60 hours weeks illegal?

Thirdly - its this is a contract with an agency of sometype, I'd suggest they are taking the pee out of you.

Don't forget to include car maintenance/repair costs in your budgeting (because if the car goes boom, then how do you get to work?), say £50/month

Tyres every 6 months at that mileage - £2-400 depending on size, so another ~£50/month

Also car insurance - I'm guessing not cheap due to your age, so that's another £120+/month?

You're at £220/month minimum just on running your car to get to work, at that pay you're taking home about £520/month, so leaving you £300/month for everything else.

I'd say no chance, but I guess it depends on your circumstances.

What bills & other financial commitments do you have?
What experience/qualifications do you have that will allow you to find a better paid/closer job?

Firstly I'd suggest you try to source something closer. It's not really the companies fault you have to travel is it?

That should not justify an increased salary.

Conversely, ECITB should take this into account. It's not his fault they've tried to place him in a company 1.5hrs away.

Secondly I thought the EU made 60 hours weeks illegal?

I'm guessing he's factoring in the commute? Which at 3 hours a day isn't negligible...
