Is this job even worth my time?

Don't the job centre say you're supposed to be prepared to commute for up to 2 hours? I can't remember if thats total or each way though.
 
Young chap like yourself OP would get that per hour down the docks, especially when there's a boat in.

I doubt it's the time that's the issue though. I used to commute for 2 hours each way, but that was for significantly more than minimum wage.

Spending 40% of your wages on just getting to work can't be reasonable to anyone?

That being said, to the OP, are there no train or bus options to get there?

Well it all adds together. A long day coupled with a horribly long commute would really sap your energy, not only your wallet.
 
Ive worked 13 hour days in a job previously. Its ok short term and nice if overtime pay but it will make you sick eventually, I was working into the early hours as well and getting allowance with a free taxi home
We had electricians come in nights to do good paid work out of hours, that is much a nicer job if you could get something like that

Agreed - but if you were getting paid ££££ you could at least feel motivated to put up with it for 12 months to get some experience :p

This, I've done 14 hour shifts with an hour and a bit commute on the train each way before and it gets to you eventually.
 
Why not just move closer to the job? I mean presumably you're getting some sort of trade/qualification from this thing too? Plenty of people your age move to go to uni... you don't see threads with people moaning about getting into a uni 2 hours away from where they live and questioning if its even worth going given how much they'll have to spend on petrol... sensible thing to do is just move there.

No Chance, should be easier to get a job in a supermakret, fast food place, local retail that pays more. Don't know a job in McDonalds or Tescos - there are clear defined paths into management.
 
For me? No it's nowhere near being worth it.

Given that I don't know your circumstances though, it could well be worth it for you.
 
:eek: I wouldn't work 60 hrs per week even on double my current wage let alone for them peanuts!! They is taking the mick.

If I was you i'd rather work somewhere local for free / even less peanuts just to gain the experience over a 3-6 month period and use that to apply elsewhere.

60 Hours isnt illegal and opting out of the EU law thing is something i did in my previous job working up to 70 hours a week then. So i suppose the hours won't get to me too bad but on that i wasn't commuting. My hotel was a 5 min drive from site and i was there for 4 month stints and had abit of a break until next job.

Im 20 i have savings etc in terms of cash but i have rent to pay at home, car to run and insure fuel etc and then i suppose you have to think of your health etc. Having recently having afew health issues id say think is maybe more the concern in my head right now i don't really want to be running myself down into the floor but i do want to work. I don't currently claim jobseekers allowance at this moment due to this coming up but if this falls through i may have too or look closer to home even if i can get a 40 hour a week job to tide me over.

I believe ECITB are taking the **** out of me abit i really do but its just one of them things.. What can you do i have been training since 16 for my job did 2 years in college and 2 years on site so my experience isn't up there yet but im confident in what i know and can do a job. I just find it insulting as just because i don't have trade papers right now they're not offering me a decent wage i can actually say "its workable" on. I know the going rate for electricians and instrumentation tech's and this is really insulting. I may wait for a reply from Dong energy applications before i proceed any further along this line.
 
How badly do you need the experience?
How long would you need to do this to get the experience to have a good chance of getting a job in another company. Is it just experience you need or training?

Sometimes doing the crap short term is better in the longterm, but if there's no decent long term gain than forget it.
