What exactly is Mantle?

Mantle is what is known as a rendering API, a rendering API sits between the game and the drivers and basically does run of the mill functions so that game developers don't have to reinvent the wheel everytime they want to do common functions like loading data into the GPU RAM.

It is supposedly, a quicker middle-man between processor and graphics, compared to DirectX; OpenGL etc. so you see more frames per second.

The most laymans explanation would be it's like Directx is currently, just closer to the "ground" level of computing on the GPU, leaner and quicker, apparently..

This.

Its simply middle-ware that connects GPU functions to the Game, Microsoft Direct 3D (DX##) isn't much good at doing that, it connects the GPU to the Game via B Roads, up and down hill through the country side at 30MPH.

Mantle, where available does that instead of DX, and flies straight up the A1 in the Fast Lane.
