Hello all,

Some of you may have seen my previous thread debating upgrading/recycling my old machine. I think I've finally decided to just build a new machine (largely when I found this was my motherboard http://www.ascendtech.us/dell-c2kjt-inspiron-580-motherboard_i_mbdelc2kjtin580.aspx I decided it would be more forward thinking to simply do it all in one hit now!)

Now I'm the kind of person who will talk myself out of spending the money if I leave ordering the parts too long. So I need to get the parts ordered in time for Saturday delivery. I have a friend in town who did a similar build last month so will be able to help me out!

This will be my first build and so I'm going to be open up front. I'm going to buy a processor already attached to a motherboard. It's taking me a lot to have the balls to build this so any complications I can avoid are welcome.

The machine will be used for gaming largely and recording game footage and editing it for my youtube channel. The games I play are Battlefield 4, DayZ and League of Legends primarily. I like to play games on the best graphics my machine can handle.

The options I'm looking at follow below (I don't know what option is best?!):

OPTION 1:

Motherboard and CPU unit.

This looks a good price, however, I don't know what the motherboard is, or if it will be any good for overclocking should I want to later on?

Graphics Card: I want a GTX 760 as it's the best graphics card I can afford in my price range with shadowplay which will likely be a godsend for recording gameplay footage. I searched for one, and there are many many different options, is there a "best" make? (EVGA etc?)

SSD: Something nice for the OS to sit on and keep my boot experience quick. I was thinking this off of it's cheap, but is it bad?

or

Do I need this metal mounting bracket?

PSU: I really have no clue as to what power rating I need for the spec I want, can anyone suggest a PSU that isn't going to break the bank and will get he job done?

OS: I'll be using windows 8.1, I understand that it can bring improved frame rates in game.

case: I have no idea, again just searched for something cheap that looked suitable, I'll post some links below, but other budget offering you are aware of will be greatly appreciated.

OPTION 2:

Same as above, but with this motherboard/RAM/CPU combo

OPTION 3:

This "barebones build" with the missing bits from above in it.

I think the budget for this is going to be around the £700 mark. Is there a way within my constraints to get more performance than the parts I've selected will give me?

Sorry for the long post and the demanding questions, but I know very little and really want to build a machine I can be happy with for a couple or so years to come.

Thanks!

Bez

I have removed a lot of competitor links.

No promotion of OcUK's competitors
We, Overclockers UK (OcUK) are happy to provide the resources of these forums to responsible individuals without charge. They cost a substantial amount of money to maintain and use considerable amounts of bandwidth which is paid for exclusively by us. As you know OcUK are in the computer hardware business and therefore the promotion of OcUK's competitors is forbidden. Examples of promotion are :-
Posting links to competitors websites
Posting links to reviews that promote competitors
Quoting the names or contact details of competitors
Offering to provide the names or contact details of competitors
Hinting about product availability at competitors and their pricing
Using the forums to notify a member of intent or actual supply of names or contact details of competitors
Listing competitors names, URL's or e-mail addresses in signatures
Listing competitors names, URL's or e-mail addresses in profile
Posting links to or the mentioning of auction sites
Disguising attempts to do any of the above

Find the parts you want at OcUK and use the basket plugin to display your parts neatly,

So I can't link to any external website at all? even as a "click here" type hyperlink?

even if they offer bundles that you guys dont?

That seems a bit counter productive and anti competitive to me.

Also why remove my edit?

You linked to competitors with competitor prices. you even mentioned a place beginning with "A" in some of your sentences so those and the links are what I removed.

I have not removed anything else.

OcUK forums are free to use but discussing parts and prices at competitors is not ok.

This is what you tried to edit in,

EDIT: Sorry, I think I might've broken some kind of forum rule with my links to a website, is there a way to post these without being naughty?

Well thanks for the clarity, but unfortunately your anti-competitive stance on forum rules means that this place is now useless to me. I don't want a super overclocked bundle, just a nice basic one. Guess I came to the wrong place.

You will find it the same stance almost anywhere else that is owned and run by a shop trying to make a living and pay their employees.

We can offer our bundles with amendments. That is no problem at all. We don't pay thousands of pounds to run our own forum to talk about buying from our competitors. Hope you understand.

Think of it like going into a shop, and announcing over their own intercom that people can find certain items (not all) cheaper in another shop. I'm pretty sure that wasn't your intention, but you can see the potential for abuse by competitors who could use OcUK's own forum (which OcUK pays to run) to get business. Therefore that rule has to be in place. You can link to manufacturer websites no problem and make amendments to bundles anyway.

Hello all, thanks for the continued help despite my little outburst last night. It's just been one of those weeks and I needed to get my order sorted out last night. Unfortunately, I've already placed my order, I've gone with an I5 4760k and a GTX760 (for supposedly improved recording performance thanks to shadow play). All the other bits are standard mid range bits.

I'm looking to install Windows 8 onto my SSD and my old OS HDD from my old machine as a data drive. So I have two questions, it's there anything I need to know about installing onto an SSD, and secondly, what is the best way to first my old HDD to remove the OS currently on out so that I can just use it as storage?

I'm sure this computer building thing will snowball over time and thanks to all your friendliness, I'll definitely be letting an eye on yourselves for any future parts I need

Enable AHCI in the BIOS and continue installing windows the normal way. But don't have any other drives connected whilst installing.

Once installed you can add the mechanical drive but double check the boot sequence on startup, once in windows you can format the drive.
