My House was burgled

When I was burgled, it wasn't so much that somebody had been through my things and knew the stuff I owned. It was more a power issue.

It was more the fact that somebody had been in my house without my permission and "how dare they" sort of reaction. A feeling of loss of control. That was what got to me.

It took me a good few months to get over it and I have always been super vigilant and always ensure that my doors and windows are locked, even if it means going on a paranoid tour around the whole house, twice! In a way, I've never really got over it.

Hope they catch the people!

One of my neighbours has been burgled 4 times in 7 years. The last time he hired some cowboys to re tarmac his drive. They made a right pigs ear of it so he told them to bugger off. They came back a week later and took the tiles off his roof, jumped through the loft and landed smack bang in the middle of the bed. (Avoided setting the alarms off)

I remember going round his property to see if anyone was still there with the police lady. We couldn't understand how they got in and out until we saw the hole in the ceiling in the bedroom. Not sure if they actually got caught but £40k worth of Asian jewellery got stolen.

I am totally paranoid about someone breaking into my house but cant afford an alarm system.

I have anti bump front lock with a handle that covers the mechanism. On the patio doors we have an abs lock. The big worry for me is the back door, which is single glazed pine with 2 chubb locks.

Our windows are double glazed and we have lost the keys, so no danger of leaving them open.

Only think going for us is both neighbours are retired and home all day, so I am hoping that would put people off.

I have worked from home a few times and noticed white vans slowly driving round and inspecting the houses.

I got burgled almost exactly a month ago, so I feel for you. I also didn't feel "violated", just rather angry. As is usually the case these days, he/they (I suspect two people because it was too much for one to carry easily) heaved a brick through a patio door and then helped themselves to two laptops, a DSLR and lens, two bottles of whisky (unopened dammit), a glass decanter I got for 500 blood donations, and a few random odds. The stereo, TV and desktops were left untouched.

Oddly, the more valuable the item, the less I worried about it. The decanter annoyed me most because it took years to earn, and I hadn't even opened the box. Bless the NHSBS, but they replaced it for nothing. The whisky was the next biggest annoyance. The laptops were just a minor annoyance because I only occasionally use them. Until...

... the -ing insurance company started being silly. Their rules state that they will replace technical stuff with the value of gear of the same spec. Except the person who decides this spec clearly knows nothing about computers or cameras. To replace the EOS 60D I was offered the value of a hobbyist Sony camera. Seriously. The big lappy, they only undershot by £150, but I can live with that. But the little lappy they seriously think that an low-end AMD-powered machine is a suitable match to an i7 machine. I don't think even AMD think that.

The OP should prepare for a fight.

We had a similar experience back in 2001, there were reports in our village at the time of a single individual or a small group of thiefs going around in the very early hours of the mornings basically burgling garages.

At the time my parents didn't really take any precautions to be on the safe side, up until around 3 or so months later when one weekend my Dad was planning to do some DIY in the house and needed to use his power drill which was located in the garage... only to then find that it was missing, as well as a new tent that had been purchased recently. We also figured out that the burglary had probably only taken place a few days prior to my Dad discovering that these items had been stolen as the tent was in last seen garage days before.

The garage unfortunately never had a working lock as it was old, knackered and the fact that my Dad's old car was only parked about just under a foot from the garage door would be a deterant to thieves - obviously not lol. It was clear that the stolen items could have been easily been removed this way

Nothing ever came of this incident unfortunately despite a family friend of ours also being hit a couple of weeks later who lived at the other end of the village.

Though something interesting did happen about 6 months later that tied into the garage being converted into a bedroom, one day when my Mum was at work, someone who she knew there who also lived opposite our road (and her house faces the road) approached her one day and said that when she woke up randomly at 2am the previous night and by chance looked out of the bedroom window, she saw the figure of a man completely dressed in black complete with a balaclava suspiciously wandering around the front of our house, he apparently looked around for a few minutes before walking off.

The police were notified straight away and a couple of patrols walked the area for the rest of the evening and the next few nights but nothing ever came of it once again.

we had our shed robbed once they took my brothers motorbike. the night they robbed us my brother was asleep on sofa and in the morning he said i heard some noise from outside but couldnt be bothered to get up and look. i know he is a lazy sod.

now get this, 2 weeks later, three youths tried to force my backdoor at around 2am, we heard them so this time the whole house got up, they didnt get far though as my crowbar made contact with one of there heads he went down and out while his mate legged it. we got the knocked out robbing scumbag and took him afew streets down and left him in the gutted. no need for police. they havent been back lol

Down and out, or dead?

It is a real pain! OP I feel for you we were burgled about 3 weeks ago while asleep upstairs. My housemates 6 week old merc was taken and both our work laptops.

The thief left my credit card in the kitchen and my wallet that was in the lounge. So we think he was purely after the car. Though took the laptops as they were all packed up.

I thought I was ok about it but I still feel paranoid.

Quick update for those interested:

I received a call late last night from the officer who has been dealing with this since Monday night, he said they have a lead, I am guessing it is from the Corner shops CCTV, they must have spotted a known crook, I am not sure. I think its too soon for an I.D from the prints they found (if they are in the system).

He told me my case has been passed on to CID in Fleetwood because it seems to be parts of a bigger, on going investigation.

Sorry to hear about this.

But thanks for prompting me to bug my folks about having some decent security fitted. Frankly if someone broke into our house they would have a field day with the amount of computer gear in my room.

Grandparents got burgled a few years ago because they left the back door unlocked. It was broad daylight, they were both in the lane round the back doing something or other (strimming and cutting the hedge etc. I think, so making a fair amount of noise).

They entered through the back door, left most things un-touched, but took some jewelery (unfortunately of the irreplacable and sentimental type) along with some cash.

It would quite a result if they caught the scrote that did this.

Yeah it would, the way the old bill have handled this has really impressed me, from the first response, the CSI, the Community police going door to door and checking in on my wife yesterday and all the communication in between.

I only hope that, if caught the CPS/Courts dont put all this to waste by being too easy on them.
