I chose the avenger in the end. I was looking at the 315p for a bit of exploration. If I change my mind I can always melt it down and get a different one. You can search the organisations then you apply to join and Halfmad accepts it. This is the only OcUK one at the moment.

in an interview they gave an example of 120 people being around a starter planet would make a separate instance appear

If this game continues development and remains long term viable (such as WoW, EQ etc.) then I can imagine the instance limits will increase over time as computers get more powerful, server hardware limits increase etc.

With such a graphically and computationally intensive game local GPU horsepower and server side CPU (for calculations etc) will be critical. I do expect them to find an acceptable limit during the alpha/betas and until they've optimised we won't know for certain what that limit will be.

120 sounds like a lot of ships in one space area... But then again, I've never played wow or Eve, do that number might be ludicrously small by today's standards.

120 for a first person is a lot, especially given that we do not know the bounding size for each instance... However compared to Eve it is low, but then in Eve your not actually flying the ship... 120 ships should allow for decent fleet battles, but I don't think we know if a capital ship = 1 ship or 10 for example.

wow is probably the same.

EVE is in a league of it's own but slideshow with thousands.

there was a big fight the other day
over 70 titans lost apparently
not exactly exciting but still cool how the server can run thousands of excel computations at the same time without dieing.

This is part of the limitation:

Essentially each ship has so much going on that right now technology probably can't keep up, but as tech improves so will the potential size of instances.

It's not servers as such, plenty of people can be on a server (which is lightly a cluster of several physical/VM servers) as you move from one area to another you'll move from one instance to another depending on several factors, some random and some influenced by your desire for PVP etc.

The server needs to calculate everything for all those clients, and then every client has to be updated on every other client. The complexity rises exponentially the more clients you have.

needs to handle the economy and everything else as well.

the bigger you get the harder it becomes.
eve is so complex they stopped using hardrives like 10 years or more ago because they weren't keeping up with the cpu clusters

Defiance did this and apart from the not so great game it actually worked quite well... Allowing a MMO to be playable on consoles at least.

are people playing this yet or is it just a alpha/beta? and if so how can i jump in on this.

i hear so much about this game but i cant find out how to have ago. it must be the loudest gaming secret around at the momment lol...

It's pre-Alpha.
We're expecting the second Pre-Alpha module very shortly, which is the Dogfighting.

For now, you can pledge a bit of cash and get the Hangar Module, which lets you walk around, sit in your ship and a couple of little extra bits. Basically, it's done as proof to us pledgers that they're actually achieving stuff.

Pledges start around $30 for a full package (ie a ship, character slot and full copy of the final game). To this you can add more ships, or buy additional packages (bigger ships and more character slots).

However, you really only need a basic Aurora package to get in on the Alpha and Beta.
Pay close attention to the package descriptions and make sure you get one that actually gives you what you want.

No alpha or beta yet, there's a pre alpha where you can walk round your ship, We're waiting on the dogfighting pre-alpha, It's coming march-ish

I will be surprised if the release isn't delayed, the community won't be too fussed either as a huge majority just want it done right with no publisher screwing it up.
