Rumour has it, this game was confirmed as being instanced?
in an interview they gave an example of 120 people being around a starter planet would make a separate instance appear
120 sounds like a lot of ships in one space area... But then again, I've never played wow or Eve, do that number might be ludicrously small by today's standards.
Could someone explain why servers can only handle so many players? Is it network coding or?
The server needs to calculate everything for all those clients, and then every client has to be updated on every other client. The complexity rises exponentially the more clients you have.

Defiance did this and apart from the not so great game it actually worked quite well... Allowing a MMO to be playable on consoles at least. This is part of the limitation:
It's not servers as such, plenty of people can be on a server (which is lightly a cluster of several physical/VM servers) as you move from one area to another you'll move from one instance to another depending on several factors, some random and some influenced by your desire for PVP etc.
are people playing this yet or is it just a alpha/beta? and if so how can i jump in on this.
i hear so much about this game but i cant find out how to have ago. it must be the loudest gaming secret around at the momment lol...
