Can anyone suggest a suitable app, ideally mobile and desktop based, that can keep track of personal spending and have a summary of where the money has gone with a fairly detailed breakdown as far as rent, rates, gas, meals, lunches, coffees etc.

I have a client who is absolutely useless with their finances and they need something to try and help them out.

Thanks.

A quick Google search turned up many results for free and paid apps for both iOS and Android....

Gee why didnt I think of that and just try them all rather than coming on here and asking for a recommendation

What's wrong with Excel?

She has little to no Excel knowledge so would prefer something she can just input the date into and also be able to do it while at work as she works long shifts.

Excel isn't exactly hard to learn, and host the spreadsheet on a cloud storage site (Google docs, Dropbox etc).

Heck, you could probably produce the excel spreadsheet for her and she just has to put the data in.

This really.

Excel can be as complex or as basic as you need it to be. Inputting personal expenditure is about as easy as it gets.

Microsoft Money, although desktop based (and slightly American) is very good imo and would recommend everyone use it. Especially with the advanced budgeting and reporting (no more difficult to manage). It's free too!

Natwest still allow you to export statements to Money, wish Nationwide would do the same!

I could but I wouldn't want to charge her for it to be honest and I dont want to have her on the phone when she inevitably breaks something and because I wouldn't be charging her I wouldn't have the time available to lock it down and idiot proof for her.

Thanks although I think from memory she uses a Mac! SHould have said that in the opening post!

I went down a slightly more expensive route and wife'd an accountant - makes life pretty simple, I get automated monthly reports, budgets etc sent through :)

I still use MS Money and the OFX file export from Nationwide works fine for me. There was a time it produced incorrect OFX files but that's now fixed. The only annoyance is you need to download per account.

I use You need a budget. I have it linked to dropbox on my phone, desktop and laptop. Pretty simple to use and has nice pie charts on as well.
