And EA wonder why people hate them......

Are we doomed to this charging model taking over in a few years?

It already has taken over, it is by far the preferable model for developers right now as it has proven to be incredibly effective.

Seriously!

I know this is the PC section and that's a mobile game, but I loved the PC original back in the day. They've destroyed it, given it horrible cute graphics, and stuck in the predictable micro transactions. Are we doomed to this charging model taking over in a few years?

Agreed!

Like the film industry we are now hitting the time where publishers seek to re-hash the old greats in a hope they'll score them some quick cash!

I don't think its a problem.

The people who played Dungeon Keeper back in the day still have the originals and they know this is not a true addition to the series.

The people who weren't around for the original games can play this, and perhaps serve as a introduction to the original games which can still be sourced.

Oh I do vote with my wallet, but sadly I seem to be in the minority. At least its mainly mobile gaming for now, but given time who knows? Though I guess its more suited to mobile at the moment as you have more casual gamers there who seem to expect their games to be cheap/free up front. Shame though, I've pretty much given up on mobile games as a result.

Maybe, but on the other hand I would have loved a 'proper' mobile version of dungeon keeper, it would actually be very suited to a tablet.

£1.50 to dig out a square is cheap.
if you wanted that square dug out in real life it would cost you hundreds if not thousands

i used to love DK... i so want there to be a new one...

There is a remake on steam apparently, War of the Overworld. But its early access and I dont really touch those, might take a look if they ever finish it. I'd like a real sequel though, but if EA own it I wouldn't have high hopes...

yeah, i used to play it to death, it was probably my first real game that i got into. if they did make a remake, id buy it, day 1, no questions asked.

however... war of the overworld hey?

*heads off to steam*

Looks like they have taken the childlike wow graphic and used it for a game which was always meant to have dark comedy, mischievous looking graphics. Awful just awful.

Images of this game have been floating about for a quite a while now; my first impression was the exact same as yours! I'm not sure what they thought they were doing with the graphical style, they could have at least kept it looking the way it should... instead they've shafted both the gameplay and visuals of the original!

As for War For The Overworld, I'm eagerly anticipating its proper release. Like many people I'm not a huge fan of playing unfinished early-access games. I made an exception with Planetary Annihilation, but even that I only played briefly then put it down (waiting until it's done, or almost there at least).

In app purchases and the way this encourages developers to cripple their games, is one great reason to be a pc gamer

yea mighty quest for epic loot is the same but not to such a severe extent.

they just use micro transactions to add a time wait to extend how long it takes to reach endgame which adds nothing to the game at all and is just a cheap cash in.

the most successful game with in game transactions must be LOL and that game doesn't really have any added time sink.

sure you have to earn ingame cash to unlock the chars if you don't buy them outright but it's done in a way you would expect from a regular game anyway

To be fair though, if you were a dev I highly doubt you would either, complain about the micro transactions that would make you cash, or refuse to implement them.

Believe me when I say that none of us devs want to implement any of this pay to win malarkey (which some PC games have been guilty of too, like World of Tanks before they made some of the more recent changes, and Planetside 2 has walked a fine line with some of the weapons they released very shortly after its initial launch). Sadly though, the people with the money often want to replicate the success of some very high-profile pay to win games (citing them as examples of what "works", therefore it must be "okay"). Mobile and Facebook are of course home to the worst of the bunch! Luckily though most recent free to play games on PC make a concious effort to stamp "NO PAY TO WIN, NOT NOW NOT EVER" all over their store pages on Steam etc as they know us western gamers are very paranoid about these slightly less ethical monetisation techniques (especially in multiplayer games that are meant to be competitive). Interestingly though gamers in the east are far more tolerant of it o_O Perhaps it's a culture thing.
