How risky is buying a GPU (Gainward) without warranty?

Currently been offered a 780 Ti from a friend for a decent price, however being a gainward card i would have to go through the retailer for my RMA (not possibly as it was a gift from his ex missus  ) The cards brand new and never been fitted, just wondering what the failure rate/reliability of the 780Ti and gainward in general, as far as graphics cards have gone from me they are either DOA or last for years.
Opinions?
EDIT: Price i'm purchasing it at is £320 (if i'm not allowed to show this for any reason mods please delete this section)

You need to tell us how much your saving compared with buying a brandnew one with a warranty

Am the type of person that thinks if you can afford to replace it if it does died then buy it...
But if you can't afford to replace it if does died then don't buy it..

Also I own 100's of items that the warranty has ran out on so warranty's don't really mean that much to me.
Plus I have a real bad habit of wasting money like it water..:o

Price is updated in the OP and its a £240 saving over http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-185-GW Just wasn't sure on the reliability of the brand/chip itself, If it was to ever die i would just buy another GPU when i went back to the states so it's not a huge issue. Along with the extra cash i'd get from the resale of my 670 would make this a very cheap upgrade

I say go for it.

Don't suppose you can get him to agree to you paying AFTER you check it's not a DOA? Cheeky maybe, but that's what I'd suggest if I was the seller (wouldn't want to stiff a friend, even if there was no way I could know beforehand).

That's a healthy saving, and it will make quite an upgrade from your 670. But you say it has never been fitted - if you can, you should certainly make sure it isn't DOA before you hand over your money.

EDIT: £320? On second thoughts, I don't think you should go for it. Too risky. But...erm...if you could give me your friend's contact info, that'd be great.

He's invited me to take my PC round to fit and test it at his house so that shouldn't be a problem

He shouldn't have let that one get away!

Some things aren't even worth the raining GPU's

I'll just PM them to you now mate.. ;)

From the positive response it's seeming like i'll be acquiring it, forgot to mention i'm currently running 1440p so it would be a welcome upgrade, anyone got any info as gainward as a brand?

I will not buy anything associated with Palit again. Have always wondered where all the Palit cards on auction sites come from, online retailers, any retailer, doesn't seem to sell them

Dunno whats wrong with Gainward, I have a gtx770, working great from day one.
Even works nicely with Evga's Precision X.
Can't say anything about durability but it works great, plays all my stuff at ultra and didn't overheat even once.
I'd say go for it mate, especially if that's from some friend of yours.

No idea if any of you guys who previously commented will see this, but went and picked the card up about 20 minutes ago and the card is perfect, literally sealed in the antistatic bag with all the clear protectors on it, worth the risk? I'd say so right now ^^
