Wear cycle helmets! then this won't happen.

I made a few calls; rattled some cages, he has a place at his grandmothers now after-all, think I made some people feel rather inadequate but what the hell.

He can still come back here if it falls through but hopefully his family might start to take an interest, he is a good kid and deserves better.

Glad to see at least one person in the lads life cares enough to have a place for him whatever happens Leon, and after seeing the previous thread just before Christmas you definetley deserve the "man of honour" title.

Onto the subject of helmets, It's my personal belief that, in the 2 major accidents I have had whilst riding, the first occasion the helmet saved my life. I was forced into a kerb edge by a passing car, which was far too close because he just didn't bother to move over, the bike hit the kerb and toppled, the next car behind did his best to stop but at 30mph he couldn't stop in time and the front corner of his car hit me square in back of the head. Without a helmet I'm certain I would not be hear today.

The second occasion I was coming through a junction, my right of way but a 4x4 decided to pull out on me about 4-5 meters before I got there, I slammed into the side and my head went through the drivers side front window...which was closed, so my head shattered it. Again, if I wasn't wearing a helmet I can only imagine the damage that would have been caused.

I would say cycling on a road absolutely requires a helmet, but thats my opinion based on my personal experiences. Also for the record....CT scans are no fun at all

It's sad that there are those on here who would say that you don't know if you would have been worse off and a helmet may have damaged you more.
I'm with you 100%.

I'm sick of people telling us we all have to wear helmets on our bikes. Per mile, you have more chance of injury by walking, but we don't expect walkers to wear helmets. Lots of people have stories about how a helmet saved their life, or how a friend of a friend would have been saved if only for a helmet. I don't doubt those stories, but the plural of anecdote is not data.

All my accidents on cycles have never involved a motorist. Thankfully only one involved me hitting my head, and that was at low speed thanks to some ice and a very quick smack took the pavement (cycle path) that left me extensively bruised.

Personal preference or not, if you smack your head a helmet will reduce the chance of injury or death if written properly properly.

me too.

the comment from leon saying some of us would never see sense really ****** me off considering when 5ub was asking for donations to make leons family christmas a good one...

it felt like a slap in the face and makes me seriously regret donating to his Christmas.

I don't wear a helmet
I accept those risks
It's my personal choice not to wear one.

I find it really condescending when someone tries to tell me how I should live my life it is my life to live! as long as I am staying within the law then WTF does it have to do with anyone else?

there has been cycling safety experts on the news saying they don't even wear a helmet and they must know the risks far better than I do.

IF I were a commuter and spent a lot of time on busy roads then maybe I would wear one but I wouldn't attempt to judge those who don't

Unfortunatly you also have to interact with other people in this life, who may have to deal with the outcome if it does go bad as much as you do.

Not sure I really judge people who don't, but having seen what a difference proper safety gear made when my brother had an off on his motorbike its certainly something I won't take lightly in future.

I wear a helmet, I've smacked my head on the ground, and I'm glad I was wearing a helmet at the time.

But if you don't wear a helmet, that has no effect on me. Therefore, I don't care if you don't wear a helmet.

I'm shocked/worried to see that judges are swaying towards the opinion that not wearing a helmet where someone reckons it may have reduced injuries can count as contributory negligence. I can't think of any other situation where not wearing a non-legally required item will count as contributory negligence.

after 13 or more years of cycling to the station daily, I decided this week end to by a helmet. I saw this thread and I've been nagged to get one for sometime.

Comfortable but weird. It doesn't feel like it would really do much tbh.. The only thing that but my off is that people now see me as another cyclist rather than a bloke riding a bike. Still, I doubt it won't be long until it's law so might as well get used to it.

A good friend of mine hit a pothole whilst wearing a good brand of helmet, he suffered severe brain damage and sadly passed away 3 years later after having no quality of life.

Even with a helmet it can still happen but I agree that it does reduce the risk in some occasions, they are only plastic and foam after all.

Hope he get some of life's breaks soon Leon.

The comment I made about people never seeing sense was a reply to what Dimple posted below.

Last year a woman in our department came off her bike and ended up in ICU with a head injury plus a really bad arm that's now full of metal but she came back still not wearing a helmet.
About a month ago she was in the kitchen showing a woman her new bruises and scraping across her forehead but she still wouldn't wear a helmet.
I really don't know what goes on in peoples heads.

Some people will never see sense even when they have their own scars to remind them what sense is. Have a couple of friends who will never wear safety glasses no matter how many times they have had something go in their eyes.

me too.

I did not insult anyone or state that anyone should do anything; if you choose not to wear a helmet I do not think any less of you. I appreciate what happened at Christmas more than I can put into words and every contributor; yourself included, has my greatest respect and personal thanks. What happened at Christmas is not related to any post I have made in any other thread since, so there is no reason for you to link anything you say in here back to that. If you feel so aggrieved by my posts email me in trust and I can put your regrets to rest.

Here here, this exactly.

No one said they would protect against a car or a speeding bullet.

However, should I find myself in a situation where my head makes contact with a solid object, I would sooner be wearing a helmet thank you very much.

Anyone who says otherwise is....

Should they be compulsory - hell no, I don't want the restriction of wearing a helmet when I'm cycling at 6-8mph with the kids on a cycle track.

I sort of understand you're thought process here, but respectfully disagree with it. If you were, for whatever reason, to topple off your bike and your head was to hit the floor without you being able to slow it's travel, even if you were stationary at the time, it could result in a serious head injury. An injury which could be avoided by the simple wearing of a helmet.

But my main disagreement is the fact you're out with your kids. You should lead by example.

I make my kids wear helmets. If I am with them on my bike I wear a helmet also. It's the height of hypocricy to not do so and sets a bad example for the children. Think of the children! ;)

****** defence. It's not just you though, is it? It's not just you that gets hurt! It's your friends, your family, the people that have to attend the incident and pick your bits and pieces up off the floor, the people that have to wipe your arse and feed you for the next few decades.

Cycling is hardly any more dangerous than walking. The death rate per journey mile is almost identical; although injury rates are higher, head injuries make up a relative small part of that.

We'd scoff at someone who suggested that you should wear a helmet whilst walking so why is there such a body of people harping on about cycle helmets? What actually seems to make cycling safer is more people cycling and the perceived risk presented by demands to wear cycle helmets discourage cycling.

gotta keep those people employed so they should be grateful :D

anyway a helmet isn't going to stop you being bits and pieces on the road :P
