I would like to buy "Sennheiser X2 Gaming Headset for XBox 360" which has 2.5mm jack, to replace my current PS4 headset which uses a 3.5mm jack with 3 rings.

I would need converter but does the 2.5mm female to 3.5 mm male adapter have to have 3 rings in order for it to work?

The 2.5mm end should only be at the headphone end, not the console end and the cable should be supplied with it.

The 2.5mm is from the headphone but the console end uses 3.5mm end (different console as the headset is designed for xbox 360 not ps4)

Ah fair enough. I think then that the converter needs to have three rings as one is for the microphone.

That's what I though but the headset has one piece & microphone the 2.5mm has 2 rings..

But the current PS4 headset has the same set up but uses 3.5mm with 3 rings...

Well if it only has one ear cup, then that would make it mono. Assuming that is the case, then it has what is known as a four pole jack. If there are three plastic separator rings, then there are four sections: sleeve, ring one, ring two, tip. Would make sense for a stereo headset to have a four pole jack, as it would have left, right, ground and microphone, but normally one would expect a three pole, as is with the X2. Some do have four poles though, and only use three of them. For a mono headset, they would be; left or right (depending on the headset), ground and microphone. IIRC, normally if one pole is unused, it is normally the tip. What you need is for the PS4 headset to correspond with the X2, when it comes to which channel uses which pole. Without knowing how Sennheiser have wired the X2, it's hard to know, unless there is some info somewhere.
