Episode overall was average. I think the challenge should have only been two segments instead of all three as it dragged on as it was so would have been better had it been broken up.

I enjoyed the episode and thought it was entertaining. IMO that's what it's about, your loss if you're going to nitpick and complain how scripted it is - we've known that for ages now.

Even a scripted Top Gear is better with some basis in reality and if it can't manage that, at least have some original impressive stunts that we haven't seen before rather than just "car explodes". The final segment was stupid, overly long and not entertaining at all IMO.

It was actually enjoyable enough up until that point though.

I love Top Gear, but even I found that episode to be meh.

I know we shouldn't take them seriously, but why would you pick an XR2 and a Nova, when you have the likes of a Clio Williams and Rallye's that would have blitz that hill climb..
<<just incase anyone missed the episode>>

But then again if they did they would have destroyed two great cars.

I honestly thought it was funny and was laughing quite a lot.
Maybe I'm going mad but it was genuinely amusing in places.

Yes it was also extremely stupid and the things like the keys on the roof were unnecessary and unamusing, but on the whole it wasn't as bad as I expected.

Or I am regressing and my mental age is decreasing drastically.

The Guardian reviewed Top Gear, and amazingly they liked it. :p Did not expect that.

Renault Clio Williams were massively expensive when they came out (without looking, that's what I remember at least), so to have a more reasonable XR2i / Nova is actually more realistic. :p

Surely a Seat Cupra isn't any cheaper?

We watched it last night and thought it was terrible. First half was bearable, second half annoyed me. The random vehicles Policed up just wasn't funny. The supermarket segment was poor. In the end I wished that the cast were really blown up with high explosives.

I think they should just cut back on the money they spend on the stupid shows like last night's and just do a couple of special shows instead.

Last night's old vs new hatchback show is a concept I've wanted done properly for years so when I first turned it on I was excited about it. When I saw the new hatches behind them in studio I figured there would be some kind of good shootout with good old hatches.

More of a shame than anything really. Missed opportunity to show some interesting motoring. But still open to a little slapstick humour.

Even visiting real teens motoring in McDonald's car parks etc would provide more real entertainment.

I think you're right. I just looked up how much they originally cost and how much they'd cost today. Originally £13,275, adjusted for inflation £23k.

I didn't really enjoy it, a couple of bits were funny but they're trying too hard and it's all a bit obvious and silly.

I do love my TG, but it really is as if it's trying too hard to be a parody of itself these days.
They've lost their balance IMO.

+1

I'm not normally one to moan about TG but thought it was a strictly average episode episode - certainly nothing memorable. A lot of last seasons episodes were very very good.

The TGPD thing did go on for a long time too... :/ Also we all love a bit of staged comedy, but the entire episode was just staged - it felt like i was watching actors, not a bunch of mates who like just dicking around with cars and have a huge budget to do so. That's all i want to see really. Clarkson doing wheel spins shouting power, May being a grumpy sod and Hammond getting the **** taken out of him. And in amongst this - all three of them doing stuff that i wish i could with cars. Their unique formula was always making the boring, nerdy and anorak subject of cars into something that was entertaining and non geeky. Something that your girlfriend or mum would watch who don't even know the first thing about cars.

The SIARPC was crap as well - i've never fast forwarded this segment, but i had to because it was just....boring.

The episode last season (i think) where they went to that rallycross place ("How to have more fun with cars than you can with a set of golf clubs") and raced together. That was utterly awesome - proper old style Top Gear. The episode with the "What 458 rival should you get if you didn't want a 458" in Italy was good as well. The Chris Evans letting May drive his most prized Ferrari was awesome. The Spanish trip was excellent and the finale to last season was really really brilliant. In fact, 99% of the time TG is awesome - just last night was a bit "meh". Especially for a season opener.

It was a shame they wasted the time at Caerwent, the guy I work with is a regular rallying up there and it would have been good seeing them having a proper drive round rather than the TGPD stuff.

Thought it was totally ****e.

Clarkson smashing into a lot of groceries in a supermarket. Hammond's car going sideways.

Haven't been impressed with the past season onwards, much prefer the older ones where the scripting wasn't as over the top.
