Charity Commission is a complete joke

I know of a charity which is appears to be purely run to cover the expenses of the chair and secretary.

I know this because as a trustee I've been asked to total receipts up, any money the charity is making just ends up in their pockets as expenses. They appear to be claiming for everything, even fuel to get to and from the shop and they aren't taking mileage readings (so personal fuel gets lumped in too!).

I reported this to the Charity Commission but they couldn't get a toss, all they did is site me a paragraph which states that trustee's are allowed to reclaim expenses.

Its really made me wonder what other charities are doing something similar if they can get away with doing this? I'm not donating anything to the charity in question because I know the money will not be getting to the right people!

It's a little known one, don't worry there's <1% chance you're donating to it.

press would be the way to go, but at the same time, as a trustee some cack will no doubt get flung in your direction too!

This is the problem! Although I never signed anything, I was just made a trustee whether I wanted to be or not

Pass the information anonymously to local press?

This.

Not sure what a trustee actually does. But anyway you can call a meeting and try to instigate change.

All charities should have to post open book finances on their website yearly, so you can see where everything goes. Would more likely give to bigger charities then.

Just tell them you know that they're using it as their own personal piggy bank and if they don't stop you've got plenty of evidence to hand to the press.

I agree the investment capital keeps the stockmart floating and most charities seem to benefit their employees rather than the supposed end user beneficiaries.

So they are fiddling their expenses, but what is the charitable purpose? Is the snaffling of money causing problems with this?

Trustee misconduct is awfully difficult to prove and things like this could often come down to a slap on the wrist for poor bookkeeping.

Bear in mind that you, as a trustee, have legal obligations and you could run into problems if you just keep your gob shut.

Anything that is being claimed back by them falls under HMRC so if they're claiming private mileage and other non business expenses as a claimable expense then HMRC would be interested.

The RSPCA has been a rip for years, pushing for more money when it already had a massive excess in the bank (killing off far better charities like cats protection and dogs trust).
Nothing is done though.

Oh and lets not forget they lease a shop for peanuts and pay hardly any business rates as they're a charity.
