Used car for £5k?

I was involved in an accident a few weeks ago, was rear ended - thankfully the other driver has admitted liability without any issues so nothing to worry about there. Just had a call informing me that my car is a write-off which is not the news I wanted, but it does mean I now need to look at getting something else!

Car thats been written off is an 07 Fabia VRS SE 1.9 TDI, I'm 27 and have been driving for 4 years with NCB intact.

I was doing approximately 25k miles a year, hence having an diesel car with good economy, however I'm leaving my current job in a week and will be working from home (Milton Keynes - roundabout world), so I'll be doing under 10k miles a year.

Budget is £5000, could possibly go a little higher if it was something really appealing (I'd need to convince the Mrs though!)

I've only ever owned hatchbacks (MK1 Focus, MK7 Fiesta Zetec S and then the Fabia) and ideally I'd want another but I'm open to other suggestions. No kids or dogs but do give lifts to family often so 5 doors is preferred!

Anyone out there willing to throw a few suggestions at me? Thanks in advance! :)

Well, it isn't a hatchback and probably a bit boring, but if you are open to a mid sized saloon and like the VAG brand, I can recommend a B6 VW Passat 2.0 TDI as a good solid car. If you can find a highline or SE model, around 07 and < 60k for around your budget (and you should be able to) it will be a nice car to drive and be very practical. They are loaded with kit, cruise control etc. (highline comes with leather too) and VW service packages are actually good VFM (£379 for 2 years service and MOT with a pass gurantee, that's less than I could find at my local independents for a major and minor service, plus you can pay it monthly interest free if that's your bag).

I only suggest it as I am currently looking to sell my 57 plate Passat SE with 60k on the clock and I am being offered between 2.9 and 4.8k trade and they seem to be between 5.5 and 6.5k private, depending on condition.

Just a thought.

Leon Cupra R

You like hatchbacks, and now doing <10k a year these would be my choice. The Cupra is probably your pick if you do need 5 doors...

Could get a nice Megane 225 or Clio 197 for around that budget.

Car I've been suggesting a lot lately, Honda Accord 2L or 2.4L Type S

or maybe up the budget slightly by a couple of quid E46 330ci?

or Wildcard if you don't need the practicallity, up the budget ever so slightly and get a BMW Z4 3.0

Suggestions of performance hot hatches when this guy used to drive a TDi fabia.

WELL DONE YOU WIN NOTHING

Eh? He's significantly reduced his mileage, and stated that he probably no longer requires a diesel.

Also it was a VRS Fabia, so he clearly likes something "sporty".

Hot hatch will probably be cheaper to run than the Fabia was considering the reduced mileage.

Nevermind OP, just get a Mondeo and keep the OCUK forum happy

even with a no fault accident, insurance is likely to go up.
Be worth getting a few quotes for hot hatches to see if you want to pay the insurance before getting loads of recommends for them...

Thanks for the advice and suggestions, certainly will be considering some of them - though I think a Z4 might be a bit too much for me (both power and costwise!)

Will have a good look around tonight when I'm back from work, apparently I've only really got a few weeks before I have to buy something and return the hire car.

a sharan would suit you well alternatively you could get a previa 2.0 diesel with reasonable mileage to last you a lifetime within that price bracket

Why bother? You don't actually win OCUK points for this.

If you actually read the OP, you will notice he's already owned one of these, so I doubt he's asking "spec me a car I've already owned"

Why? It's the perfect candidate... He doesn't want anything fast, likes hatchbacks and does few miles.

If you actually read the Op matey boy:

I've only ever owned hatchbacks (MK1 Focus, MK7 Fiesta Zetec S and then the Fabia) and ideally I'd want another

Not everyone wants a hot hatchback and even the OP has said a Z4 would be too quick.

So £5k is easy money for a practical and decent Mk2 Focus etc.

Where do I get those points now?

would you ask for a recommendation of something you already have experience of owning? assuming the op knows what a focus is like and therefore is looking for other suggestions outside of their knowledge?

As did I. If you could point me towards where he says he doesn't want another Focus I'd really appreciate it.

He was after suggestions, why suggest something he's already had, hardly helping him. He knows what to expect from a petrol focus. If he wanted another petrol focus, he'd probably just go and get one, rather than create a thread asking for car suggestions...

Sorry I forgot you can't own the same car twice... and for a start its a mk1 vs mk2 Focus at that price.

So if a perfectly reasonable option is something he has had previously that according to you is of no help? i think reaffirming a decision he has made before makes sense for his spec requirements.
