Been thinking of where to take the Mrs for Valentines and decided on the Lake District after reading some threads here and it's within budget. We'll be there for 2 nights, anyone recommend what to do apart from taking in the scenery?

EDIT: Looked at weather and apparently its gonna snow! Glad Ive not booked it now

So now I need ideas, originally I was thinking Edinburgh but the things to do there are expensive. For the same price I we could go Bruges for 3 nights, so Im leaning towards that now.

Wooden cabin in Argyll would be my choice. Nobody around for miles and plenty of beautiful scenery to take in. All in it's peanuts. Oh, epic driving routes too, if you're into that kind of thing.

Bruges is beautiful, and perfect for a weekend break. We've been there a few times and stayed at Hotel Prinsenhof, which is a lovely hotel. Number one on TripAdvisor gives you an idea of what it's like, although it may be a little pricey.

Where is the Lake District going exactly?

"Going Lake District" is the opposite of "Going Postal". It usually involves a nice scenic walk ending up at a country pub with a roaring fire, as opposed to chasing your work colleagues with an axe until you are shot/tasered/sedated.

Going Postal is often more spectacular though.

couldn't agree more, pay extra and go for fellinis though, lovely resturant and amazing food. If you do stay in / near ableside Jintana Thai was really good as well :) Infact we didn't have a bad meal out in the village atall

I forgot about that one:o, good thing is as well if the cinema is full at the one joined on, there is also another one around the corner which comes with the meal deal we got, i do love the lakes being just a short car drive for me, i should go more these days :(

And stay at rooms@apple pie, for the price the rooms are excellent.

The lake district when it's been snowing is still amazing, don't put it off.

Can't say i've tried Zeferillis / Fellinis, the fact it's vegetarian put me off when i was there as i wanted meat, but i have heard only good things about them.

i used to mainly go to ulswater pooley bridge, keswick, grassmere, windermere

mountain walks are nice been up most like scafel pike and helvellyn

we stayed at http://www.idlemill.co.uk/ which was amazing but the apple pie was a fantastic cafe / bakery and their rooms do look great :)

It was snowing when we went (about this time last year) and was ok to get around, even in my mx-5... just be careful if you go out walking, the snow can sweep in very quickly, got caught at the top of the hill behind ambleside and had to shealter behind a stone wall :)

If you avoid the high passes (they'll be closed if theres a problem anyhows) you should be fine generally but check what the snows like if in doubt.

Great Lake District pubs:

1. The Drunken Duck (between Ambleside and Coniston) - brewery tap of the Barngates brewery. Exceptional beer, food, and accommodation (rooms are expenny) with relatively easy walking at Tarn Hows nearby.

2. The Water Mill (just off the A591 at Ings) -fantastic food and beer, some of which is brewed on the premises.

3. Hawkshead Brewery (Staveley off the A591 about a mile east of The Water Mill) - beer halls showcase the Hawkshead range and local producers' foods.

4. The Prince of Wales (opposite Foxfield train station on the A595) - great beers (some brewed on site) and real ciders (again some brewed there). Hot pie counter :-)

Stuff to do:

1. Narrow gauge steam train journey from Ravenglass up Eskdale.

2. Keswick Museum of Illusions.

3. Boat trips on Ullswater and Windermere.

4. Mountain Biking or 'Go Ape' in Grizedale Forest.

5. Watersports (perfect for a romantic weekend !) on the major lakes.

6. Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding

Just scratching the surface here.
