BMW Grand Coupes

Too add and I find this hard to say being an advocate for the M cars, I really can't see any reason to have an M5 or M6. It goes like stink, it sounds really good, significantly better than my 5 series interestingly and will return circa 40mpg on a steady cruise. When married to great looks it sort of makes the big M's sort of pointless.

I thought this when I took an F10 M5 out in Germany for a few hours. It was an absolutely epic, epic car but I couldnt help thinking that almost all of it's abilities above and beyond something like a 640i were fundamentally unusable day to day in a large saloon car.

This issue with any M car for me, is it's not special enough to be a weekend toy so by its nature is a daily car. Perhaps a CSL and GTS are an exception to that rule, but generally M cars are daily cars for the well to do or Mr Monthly rich. So saying that, getting into a car that looks the same to most people and for 95% of the time does the same things whilst costing twice as much is somewhat pointless. I know on a nice road it's going to feel and be quicker but not that much really and to experience that you are going to have to go loco with all that entails. I know that at those lights with a side by side you will want the M and I know that for slip road blasts the M car is epic. But put those rare occasions to one side there is zero value outside ego in the M car and the price of them today makes them 911 money. When I bought my M3's they were 42K with spec and a 911 was 70K with spec. Today they are 65K and the 911 is 75K so they have become a bit silly and for me too close to something significantly better.

As with many things in the car market today, it's become quite a lot about the bling and the monthly payments.

I would imagine the reasons for ownership amongst M car owners today are, on average, rather different to the same question asked 10 years ago. But then thats the same with most other aspects of the car market too I guess, now everyone wants to rent a 1.6 litre diesel Merc with 100 AMG badges on it. 10 years ago a different demographic drove a new Merc and the ranges reflected that.

Quick questing to those in-the-know: is it possible to have a 2nd-hand car repainted by BMW in one of the Frozen colours? If not how much does it cost for a standard colour?

Thanks.

Just leaving this here.I think the M5 cheap rates are still on.

Why not?

I'm considering one (don't have one just yet) and quite fancy the Frozen Bronze colour.

The colour is always stamped onto one of the suspension turrets, so I dunno if they would change the colour for you. Mind you, I don't know what I'm talking about.

Just find an Individual Frozen Bronze one with the white and bronze interior? Looks epic in the flesh.

Of course its possible but it will be massively expensive and then look crap. They are diesel saloons not Lambo's or M3's. If you were desperate you could probably wrap it.

IMHO a 6 GC looks just as good as that.

Thanks for the response guys.

It's subjective in the end isn't it. I like the frozen colours - and if it's silly money i might get it done in white. Just wanted to know if it was possible and potential costs.

Why not just buy a white one in the first place (Well, I can think of lots of reasons why not) rather than buying another colour and 'getting it done' in white?

Hi, I haven't seen any decently specced models in white around my budget of about £40,000 used. My thinking was to get the best specced model i could find in any colour and pay to have it resprayed later on. I can't do the opposite as far as i know.

I've pretty much decided on the GC over the CLS (which is getting a face-lift this year) and the A7.

Thanks,

D.

Just get one that's not white. It's not a bling Supercar in Dubai nor a A3 2.0 TDI, white doesn't enhance it :p
