Hi peeps,

Forgive me for being such a noob, but I'm a basic person and need some basic advice please.

I've a budget of £400 and I'm thinking of upgrading from my 4 year old and very faithful 28inc Hannspree TV to either a 29 inch http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-006-AO&groupid=17&catid=1120

Or

27 inch -http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-003-DG&groupid=17&catid=1120

Now I'm an enlightened guy and I have read Cosmopolitan magazine, so I know that size is everything...;) No seriously thought, I do like bigger, but is this just simply down to quality vs size. the 1080 over the 1440?

I will mostly be playing FPS's and MMo's (just waiting for Witcher 3), so I do like the thought of an immersive widescreen experience, but do I sacrifice 2 inches for 1440?

I won't be watching many movies except some of the good stuff;), so it doesn't have to shine on the movie aspect.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks all.

Solo.

I've tried neither but I really like the look of those 2560x1080 ultra wides. However, I've also heard not a lot of games actually support that res if that's what you'll be doing on it.

Honestly I'd sacrifice the 2" for the quality :) just as much quality as size ;)

Aye, my gut says the same. However, If I simply bought the larger screen and thought it was the nuts and didn't even look at the other that is 2" smaller then I'd be none the wiser.

That said, would I have that little devil inside saying "the other would look better".

Gah... Always the same when upgrading...

Thanks bud.

From seeing some of the youtube vids, their's enough of the stuff I like that has it with a lot of new stuff coming out that will have it (hopefully)...

And you mainly hear that from people who also haven't tried 21:9 monitors. Most games do support the resolution and support is only going to continue to increase along with the uptake of such monitors into the future. Most of the remaining titles (mainly Ubisoft ones) can be tweaked to work using a utility such as 'Flawless Widescreen'. Then there are a very small minority like StarCraft 2 that consider the 21:9 aspect ratio an unfair competitive advantage.

Well that sells it from me.

27" at 1440 is what I'm going for in the end.

Quality over quantity as they say in the "Womans Weekly Magazine"...;)

Cheers again.

Haha maybe see if there's a 1440p 30" around quality and quantity I imagine that would go down well in those magazines. Do you read a lot of them? :p

Great tips in these mags on how to appease the wife (hence less grief on a new Graphics card and monitor). I'm an expert on nails, Corrie and what Victoria Beckham has for breakfast, because of those mags;) Lots to talk to the wife about...

Because of said Graphics card (R9 290), my budget is slashed and a 30" 1440p is way, way, way out of my budget...:(

Cheers.

Of course what you'd really like is the best of both worlds - a 34" model with 3440 x 1440 resolution like the upcoming LG 34UM95. But there's still the issue of support on some game titles there, more GPU power required than even 2560 x 1440 and also the rather significant issue of cost. Probably around double your budget? :p

I'd actually be quite tempted by that 34" LG monitor if it came out at £800! Has anyone heard any updates about the release date or pricing?

What is the rest of your system spec, fill us in on your graphics horsepower as increased pixels = lower fps

I have just order a R9 290 and My CPU is an I7 4770K with ais a GiG z87xd3h.

As I'm really impulsive, I've gone and bought this - AOC q2963Pm 29" LED IPS Monitor - 2560 x 1080. It was only £320 and I have read good things on it and the tech advice sales person said that I would enjoy it more than the more expensive one, due to the 21:9 ratio.

I got it today, but it's not been opened as I'm now getting buyers remorse and wondering if I should have paid the £400 for a 2560 x 1440 27" monitor, but the thought of the new 21.9 aspect ratio over 16:9 kinda pushed me into buying it.

So, for a guy who plays Skyrim, Witcher and RPGs, will I love my new monitor, or should I send it back (unopened) and buy a 27 2560x1440.

Now that I have it, I would love to try it and see what I think, but if I did that, I'm stuck with it.

Shesh, its like buying a Voodoo 3dfx card all over again. I rush out to buy these things... Well at least the 3dfx card was the nuts, maybe this monitor might be the same.:) Decisions, decisions...

Cheers.

If you ordered it online you're not stuck with it. European DSR (Distance Selling Regulations) allow you to test the monitor out. If you don't like it just let the retailer know within 7 working days and you're back is covered. They have to accept a return whether it's opened and tested or not, for any reason.

Try it and see if you like it.

Good point, never thought about that.

Cheers m8. You've made me smile... Looks like I'm trying it out tonight.

If anyone is interested (bet your not;)), I will post tomorrow.

Thanks again.

Let us know how you get one Solomace :) As PCM2 said, if it does not live up to expectations you can always return it.
