Life after Resident Evil 4HD

How about Alan Wake? It's not strictly survival horror, and the first half of the game takes a little while to get going, but the 2nd half of the game is exceptional. I'd definitely recommend that.

None of the other RE games are as good I'm afraid. 2 is the best of the old style though, although it might hurt your eyes these days!

I take that back, the remake is better than 2.

I think code Veronica is the worst of the old style. So much backtracking, Christ!

I found the story immersive, however I found the first boss quite frustrating because of the mechanics. I did not continue the next part as I thought it would just get more frustrating.

That is very interesting, however having just dropped 15 on it for 360 and owning it on game cube it would have to have something extra game play wise to buy again. Or or cheap in a steam sale Ahh!

This is a good point, someone above mentioned the Wii also. I have a game cube in the loft. I think I may have the remake also. Then I have 2 on dreamcast.

Plan is now get zero for game cube play that, then 1 remake!

Might still get that silent Hill game for 360 to mix it up. I like playing the old games but miss the achievements!

Interesting, in my opinion 2 is the pinnacle of the series. I really don't get the hype for Resident Evil 4, it's a good game and all, but it doesn't feel like a Resident Evil game to me. It lost the whole survival aspect, items were far too easy to hoard and it felt quite dumbed down in my opinion. On Professional difficulty it's slightly better, but I much prefer the "old style" with the static CGI backgrounds from the Playstation-era. As for the remake, well my opinion on remakes is mainly that they aren't often better than the originals, I haven't played the Gamecube remake of Resident Evil, but others which I have played such as The Twin Snakes were just dire in comparison to the original games on which they were based.

You need to play the remake ! it is good, definately one of the best.

My plan has failed, I remembered today why I did not play the games when I got them for the gamecube.

None of the games work properly with the TV, its like slow motion (other than resi 4 which is playable but not perfect)

May be something to do with LCD tvs!

get a cheap PS3 and play Last of Us. epic game that is a must play, if not you are truly missing out

I have seen this game and it does interest me !

My blu ray player in the bedroom is dying so this may be a plan.

However it will depend on how cheap I can get one!

I still have my resident evil 4 silver one...

Actually playing it through, yet again, on PS3... I was sooooo happy when I found the PS3 HD Version had extra bits in it :D I had only ever played it on the GC So missed out the extra missions that were not in that version.

I still think this is one of, if not THE, best game ever made! The first time I played it I was in awe at the sheer size and scale of some of the on screen sprites. The bit with the 2 El Gigante bosses in the room with the lava floor still wows me to this day.

I tried 1 a good while ago but could not get into it.

I have 1 and 3 on the pc, may just try 3!

The issue I have is if I do not get into a game relatively quickly, i then struggle to make time for it. then by the time I get back to said game, i cannot remember where I was up to etc.

When I get hooked like RE4 i put the hours in.

That's exactly how I am with gaming these days. If a game hasn't gripped me within 30 minutes (sometimes I give it an hour) then I'm done. I have no time to play something I don't think is 'great'. I used to be able to play anything but now I find I have no patience whatsoever for games.

It's annoying because more games than ever seem to mess about for an hour with condescending tutorials and I can never seem to stand it long enough to get through it. Probably missing out on some good games.

I got RE4 on PS Plus for free but changed accounts since and forgot to play it. Shame as I could fancy going through it now while I wait for Dark Souls 2

I thought Resident Evil 6 was the best one (5 the worst). Loved every minute of 6 though, hope 7 don't stray to far away from it.

7 needs to stray from 6 otherwise nobody will buy it, it's awful.

Also just noticed Silent Hill: Homecoming mentioned. It's similarly awful, avoid.

I wouldn't say Homecoming was awful! It's not amazing by any means, I thought it was fairly solid, had some eerie parts at least which is more than can be said for Resident Evil 5 & 6! I'm looking forward to The Evil Within.

It's one of just a few games that I couldn't even bring myself to completing. In fact I think I got completely cornered by some stupid huge spider in a hotel or something, totally unable to defend myself or attack it properly due to a lack of weapons. Massively frustrating.

I've heard Downpour was slightly better, but both Silent Hill and RE seem to have entirely lost their way since the early days.

I know what you're on about and I can see how that might be annoying but you should've planned better! I'm always reluctant to use my weapons in survival horror games unless absolutely necessary! :p

Agreed though, Silent Hill and Resident Evil were both great franchises. Silent Hill has taken a turn for the worse this generation, and there were so many terrible RE games last gen that I've failed to keep count, the light gun spinoffs were particularly bad.

I couldn't plan better, they kept coming and coming and coming, and they were in my way.

Evidently I wasn't in love with the game up to that point anyway otherwise I'd have restarted and tried another approach. The whole thing just felt rather poor.

You could say it was a poorly designed game, or you could say it was unforgiving, I prefer to go with the latter because I have an irrational love of certain crap games. :p

OP should probably look at Alan Wake or the first Dead Space if he wants a similar-ish experience to Resident Evil 4. I can't agree with whoever said Dead Space 2 was the best in the trilogy, I thought it was terrible. And let's not even mention 3.
