Hi,
Anyone here have any of these ? I can see some good review's for the Golf GTI MK7 with PP and the Golf R which uses the same Engine as the new Audi S3...

What does everyone think ?

Surely if you can afford it and want the extra performance you'd just go for the R?

this

I have a PP golf gti..and it has reasonable running costs (125 quid a year tax, fuel is ok, insurance is cheap enough as I am a middle aged now!)

to be honest it has all the performance I will ever practically need on the road

does it stop me wanting something else faster...hell no..but I would be waiting to see what the new cupra R is going to be doing before I made up my mind if I wanted that level of performance..there would also the the 135i to consider as well

I test drove the MK7 Golf GTI last weekend and was thoroughly impressed.

Considering it is 100bhp down on my M135i it really didn't feel that much slower. Great exhaust note too, more the sort of character I would expect from the R.

Unfortunately it is let down by the pricing. These will still sell like hotcakes but by the time you put a few options on it is S3/M135 territory. That said, I honestly preferred it to the new shape S3 which left me cold.

Contradict yourself much?

I am very impressed with my mk6 GTI so the mk7 should be very good indeed. But if funds allowed then it would have to be the R for the extra power and Haldex.

"Didn't feel that much slower"... "M135i in a completely different league"... :p

Why are you test driving Golf GTi's when you have an M135i? Were you genuinely interested in selling up your M135i for one?

Hold on. Just because something doesn't 'feel that much slower' it doesn't mean to say that it is therefore just as fast or in the same performance bracket. Similarly, the M135i disguises its acceleration well sometimes and you don't feel like you're going that fast until you see the progress you've made on the speedo.

Obviously the M135i is going to be a lot faster in a straight line but during the test-drive I took it on some of my favourite 40mph-NSL spots and I felt the acceleration was relatively very impressive for something that is 100bhp down on my car.

Thanks for the input guys. I will test the GTI DSG first and then the R when it becomes available in March.., looking at the Deals around there is not much of a difference in terms of monthly contract cost's, so it will come down to , do i need the extra power :)

Try this in the GTI...

* Accelerate out of a wet corner into a small gap in the traffic.

Then try it in the R. Ignoring the power difference the GTI won't be able to get the traction wheras the R will. This is what I miss about Haldex on my last Golf. I can't see me buying a FWD car again for this reason. RWD or 4WD is where it's at for me now.

How is rwd going to help you here?

How about pick an appropriate moment to move out and avoid spinning any wheels..

I never move into an unsafe gap. I said small gap, not inappropriate gap.

The weakness of FWD in this case is that weight shifts to the rear of the car, resulting in the front becoming lighter and traction being lost when the road is wet. Granted it's just as easy to have different issues with RWD if you don't drive carefully. This is why I really do like 4WD systems such as Haldex/Quattro.

My old Golf V6 4motion could launch out of pretty much any road at any time (except ice) while my GTI sits there unwilling at times.

is the GTI with PP the Haldex ? and Standard GTI without ? Will i actually notice the difference in normal day to day driving, considering that i don't have a heavy right foot :)

The PP gives an extra 10bhp I think? I doubt you'd really notice it but it the bigger brakes and limited slip diff would be nice. It would also be easier to sell in the future.

...or get a 2 or 3 year old R :)

It isn't that much slower though.
