I was on Sugarsync free plan for 2 years now. It's great for syncing your files between desktop and laptop.

They stopped supporting free accounts and sent a pester email to say they are ceasing all free accounts and require me to pay for an upgrade.

So I signed up to Dropbox. Have 2.5GB storage (incidentaly have 2.5Gb of data, so need another 250MB to get some breathing space).

Do the "missions". Share a folder, invite your contacts, install on your smartphone etc etc. If you do all this you get 250MB.

So I install dropbox app on my Samsung galaxy s3. Woooosh! 48GB has been added.

I think there must be some sort of error. Double take. Yes there is definately 48GB added.

Do a google search for Samsung + Dropbox (reference that appears on the bonus rewards page). Turns out there's a promo, any Samsung phone that had Dropbox installed is eligible for 48GB free storage.

I call that a result.

another reason i never bother with free cloud storage of any degree. ends up the creek without paddle thereafter paying rental space til end of days

hey man, i've been using sugarsync for 3 years. I'll cross that bridge when I get there. 2 years is a very long time for me.

Obviously it would be silly to expect it for life. But considering they charge like $99 p/a fdor 100GB it's a massive saving.

I dont know why someone would want to store 100GB on the cloud anyway. Must take months to upload it all. I just upload the most frequently used documents on the cloud

I used to think like that too. But many of us will have 2-3 different computers. It becomes an admin nightmare when you have to transfer files.

Obviously the highly competant IT people here will probably have a setup where they have a sync service on their LAN.

I am not that capable and I found the synchronisation feature invaluable. You can work on your desktop., Hit save, then just walk out with your laptop and the laptop downloads the latest version by itself. Real time saver!!

Well in all fairness Dropbox is basically the biggest of its kind, it's unlikely to be going away any time soon. You get 2.5GB of space and it's probably going to be pretty stable for that time.

To the OP, your 48GB extra lasts for two years, once that period is up your data is kept but you can't add to it. Basically, it stays to store the data, but nothing more.

lol, sounds like everyone knew about this apart from me.

I bought my phone as a refurb and had no manuals. Just brown box and travel charger,

My two years at 50gb ends soon. I think I had 5-6gb or so beforehand regardless though, so I will probably still have enough, and I'll be able to clear out all my uni stuff. Also had a look at bittorrent sync, which doesn't rely on somebody elses space.

Mega gives 50GB for free for life, and I have a 50GB web host / SFTP account so I've pretty much dumped Dropbox since my 'free' space expired. It's a sweet deal while it lasts though.

I've got a slightly damaged Galaxy S3 (small crack on one corner, but not on the screen), so I could only get £50 for it from one of the recycling places, so I decided I'd keep it as a backup to the Nexus 5 which has replaced it for nights out, as a satnav, etc.

On the GS2 I had a completely new ROM would grant me extra Dropbox space... so if I keep the GS3 and update it to a new Samsung-based ROM every year or two, I may be able to keep some extra space. Hopefully for genuine users this has been clamped down on, but it's worth a shot next month when I lose one of my two 48GB slots.
