Traveling to Somalia

As above I was in Somaliland. We had a government spu agent for some of trip, however, I wouldn't have rated his ability to protect us that highly.

The title was misleading depending on which side of the fence you sit on. Most people from Somaliland I've might would consider Somaliland a separate country from Somalia. Then again I've never been so I'm no expert!

Strange as the ones I met talked about there desire to be a country but did not refer to it as one. Either way the phrasing is intentional as it emphasizes to people who are not in the know the political situation there. If you just refer to it as a country then people will assume it is, lessening what people learn about the place.

Either apologies if the phrasing has offended you.

No offence taken, I'm not Somali. Interesting, maybe Somaliland nationals who live away from Somaliland take a different view to native locals?

That's what I was going to ask.

Somaliland is pretty safe (know a few people that work there), very different to the 'rest of' Somalia as far as I understand.

The wakhan corridor and other northern areas are supposed to be stunning with some very nice scenery. Very tempted to go there sometime soon.
 
Pfft, that is nothing - my train just went through norwood junction and I had to visit Thornton Heath a couple of weeks ago.

Yeah on the scale to 100 of safe Somaliland is something like 90-95/100 where as Somalia is probably in the 30's or so!

Wakhan is very tempting, the shame is it seems to have recently gone from being "So remote it's safe" to "So remote it is now a Taliban strong hold".

We ended up watching Captain Phillips on the flight back, glad I didn't watch it on the way out. We went swimming in the sea at one point and got a bit paranoid about the skiffs off in the distance, we knew it was safe but there is always that silly voice in your head saying the boats wold suddenly turn towards us. Walking out of a secured compound in nothing but swimming trunks and a towel didn't help mentally either...
 
Just put Somalia in Google image search... Looks like a fun place!
