Finally back to re-visit the build of my dad's computer for his office.

He runs his own business, mainly accessing files via Windows Mail. These files are mainly pictures from on-site, excel spreadsheets and word documents. He also creates these files in vast amounts so emphasis is mainly on speed!

He is currently running an old Dell with Vista so I am eager to get him a new one!

I have a 1TB HDD, Optical DDrive and Mouse & Keyboard alread.

Looking to add in a 250GB Samsung EVO SSD to the build.
And also this monitor:

Thanks for your time,
JC

Probably Windows 7, but how does Windows 8.1 compare?

I dont have a budget to go with, I was just lookign for a rough guide to go with for a system more than capable of word processing tasks.

Thanks RJC.

None of those tasks would really trouble even an i3 with 4GB RAM.

Does he want a capable office machine, or an expensive PC just because?

Seems a bit of a waste to spend more than you need. New OS, new board and an i3 and an SSD. Job done. Pick a budget and simple case then just get what you need. 4GB of RAM upgrade when needed.

Capable office machine will suffice!

Go for an i3 and an SSD. £400 ish should be plenty. E.g. ready-made by OCUK:

YOUR BASKET
1 x "Primo Pro iX" Configurable Intel Pentium / Core i3/i5 Office PC £100.04
- 1 x NO OPTICAL DRIVE INSTALLED £0.00
- 1 x No Second Hard Drive Option (ZERO Cost) £0.00
- 1 x Samsung 120GB SSD 840 EVO SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7TE120BW) £79.99
- 1 x Kingston HyperX Genesis 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (KHX1600C9D3K2/8GX) £65.99
- 1 x Intel Core i3-4130 3.40GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £89.99
- 1 x Microsoft Windows 8.1 64-Bit DVD - OEM (WN7-00614) £74.99
- 1 x 24 MONTH WARRANTY - COLLECT & RETURN £0.01
- 1 x Standard Build Systems - Dispatched within 7 working days £0.00
- 1 x Networking Not Selected £0.00
Total : £429.61 (includes shipping : £15.50).

Or mix-and-match with the above parts.

Or a similar amount on an FM2 system (Kaveri probably out of budget, but Richland e.g. a 6600K would be in).

Looks pretty nice, though imo I'd go for probably a 4570/4670 or maybe even a i7 4771 instead as I guess you won't be overclocking? Obviously then change to a H81 board or so

Never know Microsoft word 2014 can use 8 threads. They really went all out on their new word are and clip art functions!

Heh, was just saying that so it would be a little more futureproof and would last for a decent time seeing as it's an office pc.

This would be my suggestion. If you remove the monitor it's only £500 but you are getting a latest generation core I5, 8GB of RAM, and a good quality board / power supply combo. The case doesnt have tons of cooling but its relatively closed off so will be quiet. Nothing in there is going to generate tons of heat and the stock intel cooler is more than enough for a CPU at stock speeds.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Asus SonicMaster MX239H 23" Widescreen Ultra Slim Bezel LED Monitor - Black with Bang & Olufsen ICEpower Speakers £209.99
1 x Samsung 250GB SSD 840 EVO SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7TE250BW) £143.99
1 x Intel Core i5-4440 3.10GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £143.99
1 x Gigabyte H87-HD3 Intel H87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £80.99
1 x TeamGroup Vulcan ORANGE 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (TLAD38G2400HC11CDC01) £55.99
1 x SuperFlower Golden Green HX 350W "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply - Black £44.99
1 x BitFenix Comrade Midi-Tower - Black £29.99
Total : £724.92 (includes shipping : £12.50).

This setup uses Intel RST to allow an SSD to cache a 1TB Weston Digital Black HDD. My experience office computers store a lot of documents over time and a single 250GB SSD won't cut it.

*Just read you already have a 1TB drive, so you could leave the 1TB WD out of this spec.

1 x Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (KHX1600C9D3X2K2/8GX) £67.99

What about going for something that has low power draw, high efficiency and virtually passive. As it is a business machine the three things that matter are; noise, reliability the responsiveness of the machine (so the speed of which applications respond), the thing that doesn't really matter is performance.

So Get a decent CPU, an i5 or something, then get a after market passive heatsink that will not only be silent but also decrease the temperatures as to increase reliability. Get a decentish motherboard, although I wouldn't spend that much on the motherboard just something that is well built but not too expensive. Get a high quality passive PSU, this will decrease running costs (as it is more efficient) and increase reliability. And of course get SSD that is fast but mainly well know for reliability. As or memory 8gb should be enough, although 16gb would still be an option.
