Graphics card making a strange sound during games.

I bought a 780 ti the other week and it's been fine until today. Everytime I am in a game, I hear this strange sound from it. As soon as I alt tab out, it disappears! Soon as I go back into the game, it appears. Low graphics or high graphics, makes no difference.

Coil whine. Search the forum, it's a combination of your graphics card and PSU. Try using two separate cables from the PSU, or running your card hard to wear in the coil that's whining. Or limit the frames by an in game frame limiter or enabling vsync.

Your only other options are to replace the PSU and/or graphics card.

It doesn't sound whiney, although I guess it comes in many forms. I wonder why it only started doing it today. It sounds a little like an SSD being read, although pretty sure it's not that!

I am planning on buying a new PSU actually.

You can hear a SSD reading , you have some great hearing Haaa am sure you mean hard drive. :p

Why has it started today? It's on the Arma menus but not in game. Obviously on the menus you get better fps. I'm just curious why it's started. It's not as bad as those videos of it on YouTube.

I think in some cases you can burn it out with some long gpu benchmark sessions?

Fan speed ?

In menu's probably not work as hard ... but still harder than the desktop. Perhaps manually set fan to differing speeds ?

Rogue hamsters ? ;)

Maybe its a little voice in his head saying "STOP GAMING AND CLEAN THE ******* KITCHEN" :D

However its probably coil whine, anyone who says they dont get some degree if it is either deaf or in denial.

Or doesnt play games

I find it loudest in GW 2 (140 fps). Putting vsync on makes it disappear.

I'm just wondering why all of a sudden it's appeared after having the card for a week and a half. It usually doesn't appear straight away then?

Saying the above though, I did put in a new mobo, ram and CPU on Tuesday. So perhaps this combo of equipment is causing it. It was fine yesterday. As I said in a previous post, I am intending to buy a new PSU in the very near future, so I can get my old CPU working with the current PSU, but in my unused old case.

It's not high pitched.

It's nowhere near as bad as the videos on youtube.

Hopefully it won't get worse over time...

I had a go of moving the power cables to it about to see if maybe they were near something causing interference. It made the screen go blank and then the pc restart

Today as well I sometimes get the message 'please plug the power cables into this pci-e card". I didn't have any problems on my i5 760 last week. Switched to an i7 4770k on Tues. my Psu is a corsair TX 650w.

When I touched the power cable going into it, screen went blank and the fans went wild!

Probably will get better or disappear if you game enough.

If it doesn't it's easily cured by filling the case with expanding foam , if you havent got any/can't afford , place the case on its side , remove the side door, cut open a pillow and empty the innards into the case then re attach the door.

Hey presto ! problem solved :)

*Disclaimer* If you do choose to follow my idiotic advice please make sure you have a Fire extinguisher at hand that can handle both chemical and electrical fires !

I thoroughly recommend A Halon Fire Extinguisher as these can be obtained free from ditches that surround most waste recycling centers :D

Either you have bad contacts on the leads/connectors of either the Card/psu or the psu itself is dying a death.

Dissconnect the Pci-e power cables and plug them back in , look around the connector blocks for terminal pins that arn't seated correctly in the plugs.

Well I've not had a problem until this week's upgrade.

I want to upgrade the PSU anyway, recommendations? Perhaps a Seasonic 860w platinum, or corsair 860w.

Just thought , there is a chance that the solder joints on the power connectors for the card are fractured, if you still have the issue and the PSU/ leads check out get someone to reflow the joints for you , their pretty big and even a novice with a reasonable iron could sort it.
