hey guys,

im looking into upgrade plans for this year, im properly going to be getting the asus swift monitor when its released.

so going from my 7990 to R9 290 crossfire to power the 1440p at high FPS, worth doing? im going to have to put money towards the 290's to do this.

also, i have no interest in mining or benching so im looking for two cards that are the quietest and under £400 per card

so what do you think? should i keep my 7990 and wait then try it with the swift monitor? or should i go for it and flog it off?

cheers

I'd wait personally and see how the 7990 performs first as it might be fine Its a very fast card and has enough vram for 1440p. If you do switch have you considered NVidia? The Rog swift has gsync after all so you will need NVidia cards to take advantage of that.

good shout, i forgot about g-sync with this monitor!

i suppose 780 SLI would be a option, but if the 290's beat them at the same price, it would be silly not to really, but then again you get g-sync instead of a bit more FPS :/ lol

YOUR BASKET
2 x Gigabyte GeForce GTX 780 WindForce 3x OC Rev2.0 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (GV-N780OC-3GD) £379.99 (£759.98)
2 x Gigabyte Radeon R9 290 OC WindForce 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (GV-R929OC-4GD) £379.99 (£759.98)
2 x OcUK Geforce GTX 780 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £359.99 (£719.98)
Total : £2,249.54 (includes shipping : £8.00).

am i right in saying the 780 refrence cooler will perform the best in a dual card config? im not even going to try AMD's refrence cooler lol

If you're buying the Rog Swift, makes no sense to not buy nvidia. But if you're comparing 290 crossfire to 780 SLI I think crossfire scales allot better at 1440p. I'm sure Lmatt will come along and certify what I said.

The reference NVidia cooler is great and has the added benefit of blowig the air out of the back of the case which is nice for SLI but doesnt make a huge difference if you have decent airflow in your case. (like a side fan)

In any case, I'd still wait until you have the monitor before you do anything. Who knows, the monitor might have a string of problems and get terrible reviews leading to you not even buying it after all.

very true! thats what i shall do :)

I went from 7990 to 290x crossfire, Mainly for Mining. But tbh it was well worth it

Same here I got a very good price for my 7990 I was able to fund 2 290x's(with adding a little bit) and I'm pleased I did it as at first I didn't really want to get rid of my beloved 7990 but glad I did.

Not a huge difference, because the 7990 is a superb card. However i made the same upgrade and ive got to say im pleased with the upgrade. Minimum fps get a huge boost on 290 crossfire, plus XDMA frame pacing is better than software frame pacing. You also get things like better Mantle scaling, True Audio etc. If you can get a good price for the 7990, its a worthwhile upgrade for pittance.

The rogue swift is a T/N panel right ? I must say and others will agree disagree but IPS is so much better. Even taking into account ghosting which on my monitor i dont notice the rich colours make gaming worth it.

Before on a TN panel I could say yeh look my AC4 looks better than the PS4 on that nice TV. Now I can really feel the depth etc. Shadows everything god what a difference it make in game.

After all that the swift is probably a IPS panel :)

* I am using a PLS panel but point still the same :)

It's a high quality TN. No choice, only way to get 144hz and remain cheap.

it would depend on the motherboard too right? if it only has 1 x16 slot and then say a x8 or x4 you would get less of a boost...

I'm loving my 7990 but i dont think it would be actually possable for me to get a dual 290x for mining as my 7990 already hits 95 degrees lol.

i have a crosshair v formula-z with a [email protected]

im now considering 3x24" monitor setup as well.

so which 290's should i go with? noise is more important to me, but still want high performance

suppose i could keep the 7990 and see how it performs with a triple setup, then if in mot happy with it, get 2 290's

hows the 7990 performing in BF4 at 5760x1080 with up to date drivers etc?

A genuine question, does your 8350 not bottleneck those two 290x cards? Just asking as I'm looking to move from my 9550 to a 8320 setup. Given the 8350 is just a factory overclocked 8320, I'll get it and OC it and save a few quid over the 8350.

It'll bottleneck one never mind two (Obviously, exceptions where it won't)

But a clocked FX8320 is a very viable upgrade from your 9550.

An i7 and r9 290 crossfire would be a far better option than the fx83 and r9 290x crossfire, in my opinion an fx83 and r9 290x crossfire is wasted money.
