Choosing a new PSU for a GTX 770

I bought a Gigabyte GTX 770 from OCUK in January, which has been absolutely brilliant. Problem is, my OCZ ModXstream 600w has since died. I assume that, despite the 600w PSU recommendation for the GTX 770, the PSU wasn't up to it (not enough continuous current maybe?). According to the box, the card requires 42A of continuous current.

I've been looking around the forums and I've seen several people recommend Seasonic PSUs, but I've also heard good things about BeQuiet. I'm looking at two PSUs and I'm wondering if someone could recommend which one to get (or another, if it's roughly the same price):

1. Seasonic X-Series 650w '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply

2. BeQuiet Dark Power Pro P10 650W '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply

My specs are as follows:

Case: Antec 900
Motherboard: Asus P8Z68-v-pro
CPU: Intel i7 2600K
RAM: 16gb Corsair Vengeance
Graphics: Gigabyte GTX 770 2GB Windforce
SSD: 500gb Samsung Evo
HDD: 2TB WD Black

Would either of these PSUs be compatible with my system, and would you have reason(s) to recommend one of those PSUs over the other one?

A 550w should be fine for that system, a decent one. Cooler Master VS550 is a really great power supply, and doesn't cost too much (significantly less than say a 650w X-Series).

Although I'm sure it's fine, I must admit being a sceptical about using a lower wattage PSU. I don't know enough about PSUs to really be able to judge that, so I'd prefer to stick to one that's at least 600w, essentially to limit my own incompetence when it comes to choosing one. :D

I have a 750 Watt PSU running a GTX780 I think's its better to leave a bit of headroom, less strain on the PSU which should make the PSU run quieter and last longer especially as the price difference for me was only ten pounds difference between a 650 and a 750 Watt

I actually had to look up what the differences between a modular and normal PSU are. I'd never really thought about it. I can't say I'm too bothered about the extra cables, as I can tie those back, but I must admit, this case is getting pretty snug as it is. I had to pull all the cables out to get the GTX 770 to fit (although the Gigabyte one does seem to be pretty huge compared to others).

Silly question then. Do all of the necessary cables come with a modular PSU, or is it like the whole "batteries not included" stuff?

Cables come with it, only connect those that you need :)

That is certainly very appealing. Think I'm gonna sleep on it before I order something.

Thanks a lot for all of the help / suggestions. :)

I would go for a modular one then :) The Seasonic G 750W is a very good psu for the money. You won't get anything better for £100.

I would go with corsair or seasonic (both same thing anyway) and in my eyes what I would care about is noise levels and warranty, because internals are going to be excellent the higher end... corsair offer 7yrs on premium products and same with seasonic.

You might want to consider getting a better wattage psu because psus are one of the only few things that can be even called 'future proof' (but technology gets better for less watts). Play it safe and get some overhead.

Oh and plus modular makes it look much nicer and tidier! :D

Morning fellas,

I decided to go for the Seasonic X-Series 650w '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply. I did some research to see the differences between the X-Series and the G-Series, and the higher-quality fan of the X-Series, along with the fan control making it really quiet, swayed my mind. That old OCZ one used to sound like a plane taking off, so I'm looking forward to some peace. 7-year warranty too. Definitely happy with that.

Thanks a lot for answering my questions. :D
