Well I'm totally gutted I've just spent all day rebuilding my watercooled pc adding a extra block for a 7970, And now I'm getting a FF error code on my Asus Crosshair V Formula Z AMD 990FX. When I was leak testing the psu didn't like something. Possibly some stacked molex connectors or the motherboard bridge I was using. Now the pc won't boot in and chucks up the FF error code which I believe is the power supply and everything else seems to be working.

So I now need a new quiet psu and not sure which one to go for. I had a Coolermaster 850w modular before. But I suspect I need a little more power as the overclocks weren't to stable. What do you recommend?
Ideally no more than 190mm in length which also allows for the connectors on the end. Otherwise I might need to relocate a 240 rad or do some modding.

i had an xfx 750 bronze psu and its still going perfectly now 18 months or so down the line, friend has it now but runs perfectly with the cpu oc to 4.8 not sure exactly what the gfx cards are but they were both gigabyte r1 cards everythin under water

I think I should go for more than 850w this time around as the Amd 8350 at 5ghz is pretty power hungry plus two heavily overclocked 7970's.

Are these any good Be Quiet PowerZone 1000W ? Size wise it seems to fit at 17.5cm

850w is fine.

I have a 4670K heavily overclocked, 2 x GTX 780s oheavily overclocked. 5 HDD's, fully water cooling kit, dedicated soundcard.

I actually ran a test, my psu only draws 690watts at the socket when running furmark and prime95 flat out

Ok thanks that might save me some money or help me get a quality psu.

What I don't fully understand is why the antec is bronze.. at that price and that level of performance shouldn't it be an easy gold? (even though the margin difference is like 5 percent)

Main reason it is made by Seasonic. Uber reliability and quality.

The only 80 Plus 850w PSU around the same price is the RM series from Corsair, that is made by the far inferior CWT OEM. Google it, trust me, they are not 1/2 as good as the Seasonic. They use poorer quality capacitys etc....

The Antec psu's have always had a price premium. The same can be said for the likes of Enermax, Seasonic etc. Either way you are getting a quality psu.

I don't mind paying a little premium if it has hopefully greater reliability! So the antec is favorite atm. Still wondering what wattage to go for as a slight possibility I might go tri fire in future but I kinda doubt that.

The antec comes with these connectors:

Connectors: 1 x 20+4pin / 1 x 4+4 ATX pin / 4 x 6+2 pin PCI-E / 9 x SATA / 6 x Molex / 1 x Floppy

My Asus Crosshair V Formula Z AMD 990FX motherboard needs a 8 pin and 4 pin plus a 24 pin which this seems to be missing one of them?

I think you'll have to get an adapter like the ones corsair told people to get of they wanted to crossfire on an 8+4 mobo (with their ax series psu )... Not too sure but I think the other 4 pin just helps deliver more stable power and is not actually needed.

Also my initial statement was more as to inquiring why the antec psu is more inefficient when it is built by seasonic than the other seasonic psus in the same price bracket with better efficiency. But thanks anyway ;)

I dont really want to be messing about with adaptors. So I think this 850w antec isn't for me. Just a shame the 1000w antec is over £200 which is more than I would like to spend. Any other recommendations?

Looks like this one should meet your requirements.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Seasonic 860w '80 Plus Platinum' Modular Power Supply £169.99
Total : £179.59 (includes shipping : £8.00).

I checked here to make sure.

Yeh that looks a nice psu and reliable. I'm still half considering the Be Quiet PowerZone 1000W '80 Plus Bronze' As it is the right size and has the right connectors plus has a extra 2 pci connectors if I went tri-fire. It seems a fairly popular make in Germany, And has some good reviews around the web. Plus best of all saves me £20 over the Seasonic. But is it a good reliable psu? Reviews can be biased and based on 2 day testing and not say 2 years usage.

The thing is, would an extra 2 years warranty justify you paying an extra £20? (7 years on the Seasonic)

Yes and No. I would be very happy if a psu lasted 5 years and with technology enhancements I would probably want a new one by then with some new super cool and possibly pointless technology? 7 years is a mad amount of time for a warranty!! My last 3 branded psu's have only lasted 3 years tops.
