So i've just been to two branches of PC World, Maplins and Staples and none of these stock this particular adapter I need. It's basically VGA to DVI-D but where there's the flat thing to the left hand side with two pins above and below it, I need one without the pins.

Is there an adapter that gets rid of those 4 little pin things? My MSi 290's output is just the flat tab. Could I pull the tabs out/bend them?

The four pins either side of the long flat one are the analog outputs (red, green, blue and horizontal sync).

A quick look at the MSI website shows the outputs are dual link DVI-D (digital only) so they have no analogue output.

Unfortunately you won't be able to run a VGA monitor from the DVI connectors.

This seems to be the way the R9 290 cards are designed.

You'll find this covered further here: AMD given up on VGA output (CRT support) with R290/R290x?

Sorry to be a spoilsport again but I don't think a simple HDMI to VGA cable will work.

You can do VGA to HDMI if the VGA connector supports digital signal output through the VGA port but not HDMI to VGA with a simple cable.

I believe you need an adapter which converts the signal and you'd have to get one which supports the resolution/refresh rate you need.

It might be better to get a DisplayPort to VGA adapter as suggested in the other thread.

HDMI and DVI both carry digital signals, DVI doesn't carry sound though.

VGA is an analogue signal, thus need a converter to carry the signal through to a digital receiver.

Would a male HDMI to male VGA work guys? So basically I plug the HDMI part into my 290 and the VGA into my monitor? Also, not getting rid of this monitor as I got it for a tenner and it's the Acer A191HQL which is decent! :p

No, you can't convert a HDMI signal to analogue through a single cable, unless it has a converter built in.

This.

OP - Listen to the advice you've been given, and quit rephrasing the same question in the hopes that the answer changes!

Edit : If the card has Displayport output, look for a DisplayPort to VGA adaptor, usually £10-15. Otherwise buy a monitor that's not only got a 25 year old input on it.

^^ This.

Those converters just rewire those 4 analogue signals to a standard VGA socket. If the analogue connections aren't there those adapters won't work even if you could get them to fit (with a hammer? I hope not).
