Hi guys, I've got myself in quite a GPU dilemma lol.

As you can see in my sig, I'm running Crossfired 7950s. I've been so happy with them, unbelievable performance and laughs at anything I throw at them. Plus, for such a small price that I paid for them, they are undoubtedly my best GPU purchase ever, but had always pictured crossfired 290x when they became available.

Now, I had my heart set on a Sapphire 290X Tri-X for ages, but knew it wasn't going to outperform my 7950s but I was intending to add another maybe 6 months down the line for 290X Crossfire setup. But with the Sapphire 290X still out of stock and on preorder, where do I go from here? A friend is buying my 2 7950s for £320 this week and from what I can see, there isnt a single card that can match my Crossfire setup at the moment at a reasonable price. With the Saff 290X still out of stock, my only other option is to go for a 780ti but its such a big price for only 3GB GPU and I've not owned an Nvidia card for more than a decade. I was looking at the EVGA Superclocked ACX card coming in at £559, but I still reckon I'm going to be disappointed comparing it to what I've got currently.

What do ya think all? I've asked Gibbo if he has an idea on the Saff 290X stock coming in, so hopefully he gets back to me soon so I can get some sort of idea on what to do.

It is a shame you are not sticking with the 7950's bud and waiting it out for 20nm, as even you said they handle everything. I wouldn't go for the X or the Ti if you intend on buying another at some point and would go for a 290 or 780. This makes it cheaper in the long run to add another. It is only worth going X or Ti if money isn't an issue :)

Well, I've just upgraded from 2 gtx 670s in SLI to 2 gtx 780ti in SLI. Have a few issues (coil type wine noises, which I'm checking out with a new psu delivery today) so it's a long, and expensive story. It might all be going back if these noises persist!

2 670 is v similar to xfire 7950, so I can conclusively say you will be disappointed with the performance of one gtx 780ti compared to your current set up. I found it's actually a bit less than my 670 set up, like most benchmarks online confirm.

Once you've had 2 cards you'll never have one ;-)

You know what, I was actually laying in bed last night thinking to myself what the hell am I doing. I'm selling 2 cards that are able to run BF4 at 4xmsaa and 130% resolution scale and achieve 102fps average during a 64man Conquest game. And instead I'm buying a single card, putting my hand in my pocket and getting worse performance lol. I think I actually put my mate in front of me to be honest. I'd only want to go Sli or Crossfire and I hate the thought of shelling out around £500 for a new card and actually have worse frames then now. Jesus what am I thinking.

Now I got to tell him I've had second thoughts, oh dear lord. :( I'm not a happy chappy for messing him around.

cheers Greg. Any ideas what is rumoured and when for the 20nm cards?

I've got two HIS 7950 running @ 7970 speed and your aforementioned points are why I'm in absolutely no rush to upgrade. All you are doing is giving someone else a bargain. Now they fixed Crossfire it works superbly in BF4.

I moved from 7950 crossfire to a GTX 780 and then to a Sapphire Tri-X 290.

Nothing can match the raw performance my 7950's had but in intensive games the performance isn't that much.

And in terms of smoothness the 780 and 290 are much better.

If you can hold of selling to your friend I think maybe that is the best option. 7950cf is a good setup.

Moved from sli 670's to a single 780, and from benches a pair of 7950's are a bit faster than sli 670's. Was a bit of a daft move tbh, but then i have a habit of doing things like this. The 780 does run my most played games without issue, but ive seen a fair drop in max fps. Thankfully ill be adding another 780 soon, one on its own just doesn't look right.:D

Have you BIOS modded your 780?

I haven't no, runs at stock most of the time. Most ive benched it at was 1189/3305. Its not a great clocker tbh.

My old WF780 wasn't the best... Until I flashed a custom BIOS.

Boost disabled, 500w TDP and 1.2v saw a rock solid and constant 1.3Ghz and it FLEWWW at that speed....

Wasn't far off my overclocked 7950's in Firestrike.

I moved from CF 7950s to a single 780 and I don't regret it.

While both were overclocked, you're looking at a drop over around 25-35% in performance terms. But for me, I was happy to do this to gain 3D Vision back, have a single card, be able to add PhysX, and to be able to have a card worth something on the second hand market for when I next upgrade (bearing in mind I sold pre mining bubble).

As it happens the 780Ti came out and 780 re-sale value dropped a little as a result but that's sometimes how things pan out.

With your 7950s, potentially if the mining bubble bursts and a load of second hand 7900 series cards come onto the market then your cards won't be worth that much. I think it would make sense to sell them now while the price is high and then re-invest in a single card.

In pure performance terms though you won't get close to matching your 7950s.
