I have found the graphics card for me and these two are ones I want I have 300 pound budget but, I want to know am I getting my money's worth if I buy 290? Looks like an amazing card but what's the difference between 280x and 290 apart from VRAM?

Stream processors 2048/2560 and I think the memory bus is 384 bit on the 280 rather than 512 for the 290.

This is the difference between the two cards in terms of gaming performance: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1068?vs=1041

If it matters to you the R9 290 is a lot louder than the R9 280X.

Not if you get the non reference cooler 290 such as the msi gaming edition etc, noise wise they wouldn't be that much difference between the 280x or their 290 counterpart(i.e msi 280x gaming edition vs msi 290 gaming edition.
Reference cooler on the 290/290x is louder yes, but as said the non reference aren't that much louder if at all(well not as much as your reply implies).
Well I don't have first hand experience but going by the thread gibbo posted comparing the 290s it mentions how loud they are etc.

As someone who has moved from an MSI 280x to an MSI 290 I can recommend it.
290 is slightly noisier due it running a bit hotter, so fans run slightly higher rpm, but for the performance increase it's worth it IMO.

What chance of 280x cards dropping down to £230?

I bought Sapphire 280X Dual-X for £220 a week ago, but that was on CZ shop. Funnily enough, when I checked the shop at 15.00, they had 5+ cards stock. When I checked it after work at 19.00, they had only 1 single piece. So I quickly bought it. I have it clocked at 1060/1500 and it has good enough performance, AC4 runs at mostly 60fps with high details, which is what I needed.

Not really had a proper play around with it yet but like I said it does feel much smoother than my 7970. :)

+50% Power Limit - 1075/1300. Pretty crappy clocker by the looks of things because if I go any higher it starts to artifact, i've not touched the voltage yet though so i';ve no idea how high I can go.

All that means is you need more voltage. Artifacts on 290 = Need more voltage to remove them. I'd dial the memory back to stock as well. Memory overclocking just raises the chance you'll need more core voltage.
