Thought is was strange tonight when the in game temps hit 89*c, usually struggle to get it above 70*c. Fired up the case fans to full speed and opened the front door on the fractal, still 89*c, opening the bedroom door to let some cool air in and no difference. Finally looked on the underside of card and the fan nearest the front of case had stopped spinning.

Gave it a nudge and it started up again and temps dropped to 65*c

Fan on the way out already after a month? or common issue from time to time?

Up to you, decide if it's worth the effort of RMA. Just be aware of it, and if it happens again definitely return. Also up to you if you want to keep it outside of warranty period.

Not common issue. Would RMA it before it catches you off gaurd in the warmer months.

It is common, It's not the first time I've heard of an MSI R9 fan failing :o

ps If the card works fine, you could always put a new cooler on it and if the card totally fails put the old cooler back on? Or is there a warranty sticker, can't remember :(

I had the same problem, the fan had simply never spun since installing the card. Once I realised what was causing my high temperatures I gave the fan a little help to get it going and it has been fine ever since.

I ended up RMA'ing mine and have to say Overclockers service was fantastic (despite a minor hiccup issuing the RMA number which was sorted without issue). They received that card at 11am On Wednesday and by 1pm a replacement order had been processed which was subsequently delivered at 9.30am this morning. And, in comparison to when the returned card I did have both fans running, the replacement is running about
15oC cooler.

Getting a 290 that fails is not common (let alone one where the fan does not spin), or they would recall and revise the product before more hit the shelves. I hear about all models of cards failing. If you buy a card and it does not work as intended and are unhappy about it, RMA it.

Waiting a day or two for a faultless card which runs much cooler is worth it.

Yeah RMA it buddy. I think personally for things like this they aren't going to get better. Take the pain of the RMA now and get a replacement :)
