Persecution of Gays

How do we not have sexual equality in this country?

If anything sexual inequality is a thing for heterosexual couples in this country. On one side there is an army of pro gay media trumpeting the gay message. On the heterosexual side, there is silence.
Yeah. I've heard of loads of heterosexual couples getting beaten up for being straight.

You're right, I'm always hearing about people being treated differently because they're straight. Off the top of my head I can name examples such as

It's a shame isn't it?

Just the usual clinically stupid forcing their skewed and ape-like views onto others. As if they have every right to dictate how others should live.

Apes are actually pretty tolerant of homosexuality. :p

pfft. world leaders my arse.

Putin's law is only banning pro homophobic propoganda. It doesn't ban homosexuality. There is a gay club in sochi and apparently it's very busy. I think the stance is sensible, hardly what you would call 'human rights abuses'.

I can post a link to a video showing those abuses (made by human rights watch I think) but it shows someone being forced to anally rape themselves with a glass and as such is not in keeping with the family friend nature of this forum. I'll trust you the link if you like.

The law itself is not the abuse. The abuse, as I've stated 3 times now, is illegal, but is being allowed to continue because the police and the government are apathetic to the suffering of the people it affects. The law is simply another symptom of the contempt the Russian government shows for LGBT people

Indeed. I think I might show this to a friend who wonders why I still 'harp on about this carp'. He forgets that the educated, tolerant social bubble we live our lives in is not the norm, as this thread shows.

So are you saying that anyone with anything other than an openly promoting attitude towards homosexuality is uneducated?

I'll have you know I have a first class masters degree from a top university, as burnsy can attest to :)

Nobody's asking you to promote anything, it's just a request to extend the same rights to people that you enjoy. It literally doesn't affect you in any way shape or form as (I presume) a happily straight guy. If you're comfortable with who you are then a few rainbow flags really shouldn't bother you. It doesn't bother me at all. Wanting to deny people this is either willfully selfish or comes from a misunderstanding at some level.

Book smarts != life smarts.

That is absolutely disgusting phonemonkey, and I wouldn't wish that on anyone. Don't send the link as I abhorr violence. But these abuses are perpetrated by monsters, not human beings. No matter how accepting society is in general, there will always be monsters.

I have no quarms about homosexuality, as I have said before. My only problem is it being pushed on everyone by the media.

Having a masters degree and being bigoted are not mutually exclusive. Many people work hard, study hard and are well educated, but this does not mean that in at least one aspect of their life they are not a complete douche.

I concur.

Nick Griffin went to Cambridge..

One is not a douche for asking that homosexuality not be forced upon the public in general by the media. For what it's worth, I also happen to think that there is far too much straight-sexual content on tv these days. Won't somebody think of the children?

So then you accept there are human rights abuses being carried out against LGBT people in Russia? What makes it even more shocking is that in the video you have first hand accounts from LGBT people who have tried to report the crime to police and have been told that they shouldn't expect anything different from what they're getting. It's not abuse by monsters in an otherwise tolerant society. It's abuse by monsters which is being ignored by a society that values LGBT people as less worthy of legal protection than straight people. That's why it's in the news. And quite rightly too, I think.

Wow. Just wow. This just shows how ignorant you are to the reality of being gay in Russia.

And you know more than him because you saw dispatches? Or perhaps because you read www. totally legit news site .com?

He has a point there has been a bombardment of misinformation with regards to Russia due to the Olympics, just how many people think that gays are put into prison in Russia for being gay.

Same can be seen here with for example Phonemonkey, he seems to think that the police are not going after those people that attack gay people which is nonsense. http://www.lgbtqnation.com/2014/01/...remist-group-back-in-russia-and-under-arrest/

Reading blogs, news etc from multiple sources paints a picture. The more sources you bring together the more reliable the information is.

I'm pleased they've started to act. I suspect that it might have something to do with the pressure the international community has placed on Russia in relation to the treatment of LGBT people.
