HD 7970 Matrix Platinum Replacement

I had no-end of problems with the 7970 Matrix Platinum in crossfire. Reference cards from a friend worked fine (to an extent). So i would advise against the idea from my experience.

The R9 290 is a good call at this price point and the MSI Gaming Edition gets great reviews. Plus, it's not a ref card so bonus! :)

ok, so - the budget is in.
£368 is what i have to play with :)

**EDIT**
I'm a ROG gimp, so would love to stick with ROG. but, would the below be worth the move?

No, absolutely not! You've just sold your 7970 ROG Matrix Platinum and you plan to replace it with a...7970 (=280X) ROG Matrix Platinum...? Are you mad?

R9 290 is where you should put your pennies, or don't bother at all! 290X is, IMHO, not worth the premium (& out of your budget anyway) therefore leaving you with the 290 as the only upgrade path in budget.

+1 if your intent on going amd and upgrading ignore 280x as you just had one of these they are the same as 7970. 290 is where my money would go

hhhmm, costs less but appears to be faster - marginally.
40mhz on core clock and 200mhz on ram.

I dont suppose i would see much difference would i?

I'd go for the Sapphire Tri-X over Powercolor any day of the week. But that's because i prefer the company not the card.

Read the reviews, swings and roundabouts really.

sorted. Sapphire Tri-x is on order for as soon as it arrives with OCUK.
Fingers crossed that Sapphire have the same decent delivery timings as OCUK lol

Thanks all.

Ive gone form a 7970 Ghz to a 290 if it hadnt only cost me £50 i would be feeling a bit robbed, i only play at 1080 and the 7970 wasn't exactly struggling.

Having recently built two different system one with a 270x Toxic and one with a 290 Tri-x I can tell you both are cracking cards.

I personally would take the single 290 though.

Stay clear of ASUS products. Read the single review for that 280x! Insane that I had the same issues with my late-build 7970 Matrix Plat. ASUS are sticking shoddy GPUs in. My opinion anyway

MSI 290 (non X) IMHO

I have heard the Asus seem to be going backwards :(
Shame really as i would love to stay with ROG all over.
Had them for ages, my mobo is ROG and i love it, yes they are stupidly over priced but im sucker for a sexy lookin GPU & Mobo :D

Dissapointed that the 280x is essentially a 7970 Matrix Plat, i was sorry to sell mine, but i just fancied an upgrade, never had an issue with it regardless as to what i threw at it.

Been tempted to do the same but I've been gaming on my laptop more than my pc lately. (GS70)

well, i have to say i didnt think i would be dissapointed.
And, im not :D

Love the card, absolutely whisper quiet.
I manually adjusted fan speed to 100% and did not hear the fans, even with the side panel off. I have the cosmos 2, with 4x120mm & 1x200mm intake + 3x120mm & 1x140mm exhaust fans, all set to min speed, they are louder than my gpu.

So, either my card is faulty and doesnt spin @ 100% or the software is faulty and doesnt adjust the fan speed manually or the card is epic and quiet.

I miss my ROG card, purely through its sheer beastly looks and that sexy red/black colour scheme, but this one appears to be slightly longer and the difference in weight is nice.
Already have ColdZero working on a nice backplate as the bare naked PCB underside kind of kills of the tech romance :D Played the beta of Titanfall hoping to get stupid FPS, but it appears to be locked at a max of 60, so will try BF4 tonight, but seeing as though i would often see in excess of 160fps on my ROG, i doubt i'll see a great deal more, but it should run smoother and quieter. Thanks all for the recomendations

The only downsides i have are the naked PCB and the fact that the GPUtweak is no longer the ROG version and doesnt seem to show temp :( but still a sexy ass card
