Educate me about DSG

My one bit of advice if when coming up to roundabouts or junctions braking to a stop then suddenly accelerating it will lurch as its how the dsg handles the clutches.

Downshift manually and the gearbox gets less confused if you are coming to a halt and pulling off after a momentary stop.

Until you stop it doesn't select first so the sudden change from stationary, selecting first and pulling away quickly confuses it and it tries to react faster than it can.

The dsg in my car is awesome. Ok its been in for a new mechatronics unit to try and solve an issue with juddering when pulling away in traffic. But when its working fine its brilliant, especially with the paddles which make you feel like Michael Schuuuuuumacher.

I think its going to be hard for me to go back to a manual for my normal commute now.

...brain dead? :p

This.

And pulling away slowly the box is eager to change up to 2nd, if you then need to make progress suddenly the box seems to take an age to drop to first at which point you take off like a scalded cat :) but that 0.5 second seems like an age

Other than that I love it

Out of curiosity, hows reliability on these generally?

Boss has a TT-S that needed a new gearbox (at huge expense) at 140k and his wife has an A3 (diesel I think) looks like it's lunched it's DSG box too

Was surprised to hear it when he said, as I thought these were pretty reliable generally

They certainly aren't as reliable as say a Mercedes auto box. When I had mine, very early after launch, a manager at my company had a Mk5 GTI that lunched it's box within warranty! He also had the head and turbo charger go in this period as well, so I cannot speak for his driving, pretty sure it was @35k miles.

Mine was going strong (the turbo that is) after 108k (from brand new) without missing a beat and that was with a stage 1 remap. Your manager sounds like he drove it like he stole it all the time.

As with all turbos, make sure you sit with the engine running for at least a minute or two after stopping if you have been using the turbo loads just before. Although the TFSi engine has a separate cooler for the turbo that runs for a few mins after engine shutdown, it's the best way of protecting the turbo.

Oh I don't doubt it, but you can drive a Merc Auto like you stole it for 250k miles and not have an issue, so my comment regarding the DSG not being as reliable was fairly accurate IMHO.

Agreed, a Merc slush box certainly is more reliable than the DSG :)

Edit: Part of the reason I didn't get a DSG at the time in 2005 on my GTi was because so many TTs were having problems with the torque and its effects on the DSG.

As far as I know, as long as you get the DSG serviced and oil changed on time they seem as reliable as any other dual clutch system.

This is all good, cheers dudes.

Any experiences of the 170 TDI lump then? I'm hoping it's not a dog tbh.

I'd be very interested to hear your or anyones thoughts when you get the car, as I'm interested in this particular model and engine for my new job and commute which will be ~250miles 6-8times/month.

Coupled with the TTS there is quite a high failure rate. I've heard 10-20% can have issues within the warranty period.

Will do, I'll be doing a good mix of the M6 and A and B roads so I'll let you know.

If you don't want to wait 10 seconds to switch it back to auto then simply hold down the right paddle for a couple of seconds. Manual will disengage.

Great gearbox, very well suited to low down torque.

I didn't know that. Comes in handy at roundabouts etc.

My S3 has dsg.

The car itself is 2+ and the dsg has been mapped by Revo, faster gear changes and removes the torque limiter, few other benefits too.

Dsg is great, I love it, wouldn't want to go back to manual. Launch control is a bit of fun too, not sure if this will be on your car?

Just stick to the service schedule which off the top of my head I think is 40k.

It's just been serviced apparently and is on 41k, it's a 10 plate so not bad mileage really.

Leather interior, Winter pack, DAB radio, Electric folding door mirrors MDI with USB/I pod connection cables Multimedia socket for ext. audio source RCD 510 touch screen radio and rear parking sensors.

Apparently!

I'm a bit confudled...thought it was a co car?

Not driven a dsg car for a while but I certainly like the box other than the hesitation early ones have. I still wouldn't actually own one without warranty - too many horror stories for my liking, but let's face it that's only one of many expensive issues you could have on a modern car
